  • Does anyone remember Ron Bryant?

I was checking out his stats and noticed that he won 24 games in 1973 and finished 3rd in the Cy Young balloting for SF. 3 years later, he was out of the majors. I would like to know what kind of pitcher he was and why he was out of the majors so fast after his career year. Injuries perhaps?

From what I've read the offseason after his 24 win season in 1973 he had a serious back injury from a diving board accident during Spring Training. That would explain why he went 3-15 in 1974. Here is an article from The Sporting News from March 30th, 1974. At this time his injury was not considered serious but no one knew that this injury would effectively end his career.

It seems like he had a lot of luck in that 73 season.
An average ERA, walked a lot of batters, gave up a lot of HRs, yet still won 24 games.
I was just a kid at the time, but I remember wondering why Seaver won the CYA with a 19-10 record that year.

bear bryant's leg injury greatly affected his delivery, and he suffered debilitating neck and shoulder injuries in later years.
