I was always partial to Barber, Curt Gowdy, and Jack Buck. I liked Tony Kubek also.
A lot of the local guys (Coleman, Rizzuto, Carey, Stone) are great if you grew up with them. But to an outsider, they arent very good.
I never heard Asburn , Drysdale, or Brickhouse.
Scully and Garagiola rub me the wrong way.
McCarver doesnt bother me the way he bothers a lot of other people.
Presently, Jim Kaat and Ken Singleton are good for the Yankees these days.

I don't know about the best ever, but my favourite has to be Tom Cheek. He was the voice of the Blue Jays since the beginning, literally. He broadcasted every single Jays game from April 7, 1977 to June 3, 2004, when he took 2 days off after his father died.(A streak of 4306 consecutive games) He was added to the Skydome's Level of Excellence later that year.
Bill, I think your Meet The Announcers thread is still missing pictures of Tom:

I also still need photos of some other announcers. Mark Scott, Van Patrick, Ralph Kiner, Bill O'Donnell, Bill King and Richie Ashburn. Behind the mike, of course.
Thank you for the great shots of Tom! Much appreciate it, gojays.Last edited by Bill Burgess; 04-06-2008, 08:59 PM.

Here is a picture of Kiner
I remember him with the Mets. He is a great announcer.
My favs that I have seen are Gowdy, Kubek, Garagiola, Rizzuto, Coleman, and San Diego's Ted Leitner. Ted is one you can love or hate. But he knows his baseball.
Here are some pictures of Ted

I'm a Yankees fan so I'll comment on them first. I looooved Phil Rizzuto. He was so much fun. The radio team has John Sterling who's a clown and pompous and I don't care for Suzan Waldman. For the TV guys I hate Michael Kay. I loved Jim Kaat but he retired after 2006. Ken Singleton is very good and I hope Bobby Murcer comes back soon because he's good too. Paul O'Neill is pretty bad. Al Lieter is pretty good and expresses his opinions which I like. The Yankees have a problem with Kay, Sterling, and Waldman being too pro Yankees in a corporate way. David Cone has impressed me so far as he's new this year. And John Flaherty is OK. The Yankees have 37 different announcers.
For the Red Sox I like the older radio guy but I can't remember his name. The younger guys are bland and boring. For the Red sox TV guys I can't stand Don Orsillo. The guy acts like every positive thing the Red Sox do is equalavent to winning the world series. On the other hand I absolutely love Jerry Remy. I think he's the best color man in baseball. I think he's natural and funny as hell. Not just baseball announcer funny, but funny funny. The pizza throwing incident last year might be the funniest thing I ever heard in a baseball broadcast. I watch Yanks/Sox games on NESN just so I can listen to Remy.
I don't get Mets games for some asinine reason, the games are blocked out on extra innings but comcast says we're out of their local broadcast area, comcast lies.
I really do love to hear Vin Scully when I can.
ScottI told you not to be stupid you moron.
