  • Roberto Clemente, Ivan Rodriguez y Roberto Alomar

For you who is the best puertorrican player ever to play in the majors?
Oswaldo Guillen, close friend of Ivan Rodriguez and Roberto Alomar, told to the press that these two players has been the best puertorican players ever to play in the majors, and Roberto Clemente is behind them in the third place.

I think a case can be made for Alomar being a hair better than Clemente, but not Irod. They are all fairly close in their WARP3 scores.

Puerto Rico has produced a number of superb players (Carlos DelGado, Bernie Williams, Orlando Cepeda, Jose Cruz, Jorge Posada, Juan Gonzalez, Danny Tartabull, and Carlos Beltran.

Of those 3, I have Clemente as the best, followed by Alomar and then Rodriguez.

It´s WARP a good measure for this comparison in special?
I say this because if warp use the value of a replacement player as benchmark then we must assume than all these players had the same time in the minors before play in the majors.
However Clemente was pushed to be regular in the RF of the Pirates in his first season as professional because he was a baby bonus signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers who ttried to hide him from others teams avoiding the rule who demand play in the majors those players signed over $4K by locating in Montreal AAA as a bench player; but Pirates look the opportunity and claimed with the condition of playing him everyday in the majors.
Clemente in other conditions had been played 1955 and 1955 seasons in the minors.
Why not take a look in the sumatory of the best ten seasons in winshares, by example?

All three were regular major leaguers at age 20. It was Clemente and Alomar's first season. I-Rod played 88 games a a 19 year old. At 20, he played in 123, one less than Clemente at age 20. Alomar played in 143 games. Clemente may not have had much time in the minors, but neither did Alomar or Rodriguez.
