  • Best players by nationality

The Clemente/Alomar/Pudge thread got me to wondering:

Who are the best players by nationality? The best Puerto Rican, Dominican, Venezualan, Irish, Italian, African-American, Native American, etc.?

I don't have time, but I'll post my own list later.

For best Dominican player, I'd go with Juan Marichal.
    Japan: Ichiro Suzuki

Ok I'll do the two easy ones:

        German: Babe Ruth
        Italian: Joe DiMaggio

I was going to do my own (Irish) but there has been allot especially in the 19th century so I have to think about that one.

Rod Carew has a stake to the claim, as well.

An argument could be made for Pedro Martinez and Oh, respectively.

Australia: Joe Quinn. He may not have been much of a manager, but he could play.

Based purely on country of birth, here are some suggestions...

                            Canada: Ferguson Jenkins (Larry Walker?)
                            Scotland: Bobby Thomson
                            France: Bruce Bochy, I guess...
                            Italy: Reno Bertoia (who?)
                            Mexico: Vinny Castilla
                            Australia: Dave Nilsson, maybe
New Zealand: Either Scott Campbell, the only Kiwi drafted so far; or Travis Wilson, who played three seasons of AAA ball. Those are apparently all the New Zealand-born players with pro experience in North America.

Over an entire career, Chief Bender must win. But, at their peaks, it's near impossible to top Jim Thorpe & Louis Sockalexis. Those two were both phenoms.

Sockalexis could apparently throw, and hit, distances no one had ever seen before. And Thorpe, of course, was the greatest athlete in the world - as well as the only ballplayer ever recorded as hitting three home runs in one game - into three different states, that is - into Oklahoma (left field), Texas (center), and Arkansas (right). Plus, he could run a little, too.
