  • Build the best position player you can ...

... out of non Hall of Famers (you KNEW we had to have a companion thread). Let's say we use the following attributes to build a player out of:

Contact hitting: Joe Jackson , Pete Browning, Ichiro , Mike Donlin?
Plate Discipline: Barry Bonds , Eddie Stanky, Donie Bush, Eddie Yost?
    Power: Mark McGwire?
    Speed: Vince Coleman/Kenny Lofton?
    Baserunning instincts: ?
    Fielding: Mark Belanger?
Throwing: Jesse Barfield, Rocky Colavito, Shawon Dunston?
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

my requirement is no active players or 1800s players, but I'll put them () though if I see maybe a better guy.

          Contact hitting: Joe Jackson
Plate Discipline: Ferris Fain or Max Bishop.... basically a coin flip
          Power: Mark McGwire
          Speed: Rickey Henderson
Baserunning instincts: Tim Raines (Carlos Beltran- strictly on SB% here)... I don't know who would be the best in baserunning as far as 1st to 3rd and things like that but I'm sure Raines is up there anyway
          Fielding: Johnny Mostil
Throwing: Ken Caminiti... (just from what I've seen- I'm sure there's probably better options)

Or you could say Barry Bonds in the early 90s.... he had all of the categories above except for throwing...

Actually, I think they were about the same because I lettered in all sports, and I was a two-time state decathlon champion.
          Bo Jackson

My sophomore year I placed 2nd, and my junior and senior year - I got smart and piled up enough points between myself and second place where I didn't have to run the mile.

He probably did deserve one hypothetical Gold Glove in 1917 but I'm hoping I can think of a better fielder than a corner OF.

Joe Jackson should be in there for throwing arm. When he still played with the mill hands he was able to throw the ball over four hundred feet. I know that during an all-star charity event he was in a throwing contest with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and Tris Speaker and won, throwing the ball 396 feet on a line.
