Remember the collaborative ranking? We ranked about 250 players, and I think we had fun doing it. It wasn't a true representation of how BBF as a whole would rank the greatest players of all time, but it allowed us to get an extensive ranking of players. It would be virtually impossible to rank 250 players through the weighted ballot system, as people tend to lose interest long before that.
That is one of the reasons I am choosing to use the collaborative ranking system rather than the weighted ballot system. The other is that I believe that the ballots would differ so much after a few spots that people would end up winning with less than 10 points. This is not what we want. I admit the collaborative ranking is much less accurate in representing our collective opinion, but I just don't think the weighted ballot system will work in ranking the all-time greatest single seasons.
For those of you who don't remember the rules of the collaborative ranking, let me lay them out, as well as those that are specific to this particular thread.
1) The posts should read as follows:
1st post:
1. Player - Season
2nd post:
1. Player - Season
2. Player - Season
3rd post:
1. Player - Season
2. Player - Season
3. Player - Season
etc.
This is so every time the list is updated, we can see the full list of player/seasons.
Remember, you post the player, his position, and the season. So if I wanted to vote for Rogers Hornsby 1922, I would post: Rogers Hornsby, 2B - 1922. This is very easy stuff.
Use whatever criteria you like to judge your players. Stats are a great help, but if you've got a book that indicates the player may have been better than his numbers, by all means give him that boost. Like positional adjustments? Use them. Think clutch performance is important? Throw it in there. And deal with steroids however you choose.
Remember this is regular season performance only. Playoff performance is not to be considered.
Major league seasons only. No Negro Leagues, Cuban Leagues, Japanese Leagues, etc.
Pitchers and position players are lumped together. How do you determine who was better, Walter Johnson 1913 or Ty Cobb 1917? I don't know, but we're going to have to figure those types of questions out.
Added Rule: Only one ranking per person per day.
That should cover everything, but if you have any further questions, just post them in this thread, and I will update this post with the answers.
