  • "Worst" team to win the World Series?

I know we had the most "boring" team to win the World Series thread.

Based on a conversation I had with a friend a week or so ago, I thought this might be an interesting topic as well.

He made a comment to me that the 1990 Reds were the "worst" (as in, most untalented, weakest) team to capture a title. The only other responses I could offer were:

    2006 St. Louis Cardinals
    1914 Boston Braves

    What say you, BB Fever?

The 1990 Reds were the best out of these 3 teams you mentioned. Their team ERA+ of 118 is actually pretty good.

The 2006 Cardinals were one of the worst.
But I think the 1987 Twins were worse. This team won the WS despite the fact that both their team ERA+ and team OPS+ were under 100!

I do not agree with the 1914 being one of the worst World Series champs. They were 94-59 (.614), won the NL pennant by 10.5 games, and crushed a very good Philadelphia A's team.

The worst World Series Winners IMO are:

'87 Twins (an awful road team)
'06 Cardinals (a product of the three division system)
'88 Dodgers (had only two starters than slugged over.400)
      '44 Cardinals (WW II team)
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

The Cardinals had the worst record, but talent wise, they were not near the worst. Keep in mind that the same group (mostly) of players won 205 games the previous 2 seasons - going to one world series and losing another NLCS to a mega-hot Astros team. The 2006 Cardinals were one of the most injury-laden teams of recent memory, facing DL stints from Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds, Yadier Molina, David Eckstien, Jason Isringhausen, Mark Mulder among a slew of other pitchers/relievers. Encarnacion and Rolen were all very hurt and should have been DL'd. Before Izzy, Eckstien, Mulder and Edmonds all went DL'd at the same time, the Cardinals were a respectful 11-12 games over .500, and it was no coincidence that when Edmonds and Eckstien came back and Wainright closed for Izzy (right at playoff time), they started playing to their full potential.

Talent wise in the playoffs, the team featured one of the leagues top 2-3 players, a two-time All-star shortstop, one of the leagues best thirdbasemen (who was having a very good comeback year), the reigning Cy Young winner, Suppan, who is a much better postseason pitcher than regular season pitcher, an up-and-coming pitchind stud (Wainright), Edmonds who at the time still has a little in the tank, and a great bench full of veterans.

The WS victory was more remeniscent of the team's talent level and abiltiy than their regualar season record. Remember, the Cardinals were selected by every expert that season to win the division and fight with the Mets for the NL pennant. When they did, everybody was shocked because their record was so mediocre.

I know that the Cardinals are not one of the better WS teams ever- not even close, but they re not the worst either.

A few thoughts on teams not yet mentioned.
1906 White Sox. How in the world did these guys beat the Cubs?
1945 Tigers- I love the line "Can anyone win this thing."
1943 Yanks-Wartime team was arguably the worst of the champion Yanks.
          1918 Red Sox-Only scored 9 runs in 6 games. Were outscored 10-9.

Other than these, I agree with the teams already mentioned.

Welcome back ARod. Hope you are a Yankee forever.

              I'm thinking it's the 87 Twins
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. Agreed... Their offense wa pathetic and their pitching was ok, but nothing to write home about..

Most teams have already been mentioned and I agree with most.. Overall, I think the "87" Twins and "59" Dodgers were the worst IMO..

The "06" Sox had absolutely NO business beating the Cubs, not so much IMO, because they werent all that good, its just that the Cubs were a superior team..

That Sox team had excellent pitching as was the same for the "45" Tigers..

                        Great pitching, crappy hitting

Weaker than the 1906 Chisox? :disbelief:
