  • Long sleeved jerseys?

Where these ever a reality or just fodder for movies based in the early 20th century era of baseball? I don't recall seeing pictures of jerseys with sleeves quit this long:

That is of course from Eight Men Out.

When and why did they change? I realize they would be much hotter, and given technological advances in the last 100 years I acept the current trend, but I just think its strange to have sleeves that long. Was it just an asthetic thing?

        Reality.

Long, loose, flopping white sleeves would be great for pitchers.

My theory is that long sleeves were just the common look. Once trick pitches were banned, many pitchers still put crap on the ball. Those long sleeves could help hide such substances. Perhaps the term "something up his sleeve" came from this, who knows. Gradually, they faded out, maybe in the mid 20's? Just a guess though.
