  • What do you consider the best All-Hit, No-Pitch team?

MLB has been littered over the years with teams that could hit very well, but pitch... badly.

What do you consider to be the best All-Hit No-Pitch teams in MLB history?

As a Tribe fan, I nominate the 1999 and 2001 teams.

    1930 Phillies......

    .315 team batting avg.
    6.71 team era

edit.....did not realize you were looking for the best....the 1930 Phillies immediately came to mind when I thought of good hit no pitch but they came in last and were not best in anything

The 1930 Yankees narrowly missed setting the AL record for most runs scored in a season. They only managed 1062 runs, compared to the record 1067 that they would score in 1931. That still works out to 6.90 runs scored per game. This team had Ruth, Gehrig, Dickey, Lazzeri and Combs as five Hall of Famers, plus got good offence from Ben Chapman, Jimmie Reese, and Red Ruffing.

Other than Babe Ruth's one complete game victory (!), the Yankees really didn't do much in terms of pitching. Ruffing, Herb Pennock and George Pipgras were mediocre, and everyone else was awful, contributing to a team ERA+ of 89. They allowed 898 runs, or 5.83 per game. The team ERA was 4.88, but they also seemed to let in an awful lot of unearned runs - 157 of the total.

What do you mean by "best"? The most team with the most polarized difference between high offense and low defense, or litteraly the best? The big -bat no pitch team that won the most games, etc.?

Sorry, I was probably thinking within their division. But I thought their park was generally a pitcher's park

You guys, come on- the 1894 Phillies hit the all time record .349 as a team and had a Hall of Fame all .400 hitting outfield of Delahanty, Hamilton, and Thompson. Also a sub who hit .416, a third sacker who hit .386, a catcher who hit .346 (and .394 the following year).

They're pitching staff was last in the 12 team NL in ERA+ (10th in raw ERA) so they finished 18 games out of first.

Depends how you read the question. Is it best in terms of "did best in league standings or percentage", or is it best in terms of "the best hitting team ever who also had useless pitching" which would preclude a high finish in the standings.

The 1894 Phils fit the second, but how bout the 1895 Phils for the first? They hit .330 as a team, had five players who hit over .385, were 10th of 12 teams in ERA, but had a .595 winning percentage and finished 3rd.

They had a 95 ERA+ and Lefty Gomez having a pretty good year- they were not a no-pitch team.

THinking of the 20s and 30s Yankees, do you guys know the story of Col. Ruppert calling Waite Hoyt in to his office to speak to him. Hoyt comes in, and Ruppert says "Hoyt, what's the matter with you?"

                        Hoyt says "Excuse me?"

Ruppert says "What's the matter with you? Bush, Pennock, and Shawkey win their games 9-0 and 10-1, you win all yours 1-0 and 2-1. What the hell's wrong with you?"

Apparently Hoyt was, for the only time in his career, at a loss for words.
