  • Walk-off HRs

Let's hear it. The one's you saw, heard about, smelled, etc.

Like pretty much everyone here, I've been to hundreds of games. Before this year I had seen (in person) a grand total of 1 WoHR (single-A, Frederick Keys over Winston-Salem Wart-Hogs). I've only been to 2 games this year, but both ended with HRs:

5/17/08: Reds are down 2-1 in the bottom of 9, with 2 on. Adam Dunn can't get a bunt down. 1 pitch later, he hits one into the right field stands.

Tonight (5/31/08): In the bottom of the 10th, I look at my friend and ask, "would you rather see Griffey's 600th home run, or Jay Bruce's first?" minutes before Bruce's 1st career HR (with Jr in the on deck circle) ended the game.

I've seen a few, but the only one that comes to mind was being at Jacobs Field and seeing Tony Pena's game winner in the middle of the night to win game one of the 1995 ALDS.

When Joe Carter came up for last AB in game six of the 1993 World Series, I tould my roommate that if he hit one out, it would only be the second time that a World Series ended with a home run.

I have a radio broadcast of 10/3/1951 that I listen to periodically.

Only one I've ever seen in person. April 19, 2007. On a quiet afternoon game against the Indians. I was sitting in the right field bleachers as usual. Bottom 9 down by 4. Everyone was either gone or standing by the exits. Cano fly's out, Melkey grounds out. 2 outs. Josh Phelps hits a solo homer. Posada singles. Damon gets 2 strikes then walks. Jeter gets 2 strikes then singles, Posada scores. Abreu gets 2 strikes then singles, Damon scores. Arod comes up gets 2 strikes and then crushes it to the black seats. There were less than 3000 people left in the stands. Easily the best comeback I ever witnessed in person. To have your team down by 4 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth and come back with your favorite player hitting one out. I'll never see that again.

The only game I've seen at GABP

The only one I've seen in person was at a Calgary Cannons playoff game in 1998. Brian Hunter hit a grand slam with 2 outs in an 8-8 tie.

It's quite a feeling to be a part of, and given that it was the playoffs too it made it even better.

I was lucky enough to be at Sunday's (5/31) Reds/Braves game as well with Bruce's walk-off. What a game. I have seen several such walk-offs at GABP (and one at Jacobs Field last year), but undoubtedly the one that sticks out the most in my mind:

Only one that I have seen in person, but it was a great one. The Jays were playing the Yankees on July 20, 2006 and the game was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 11th. Mariano Rivera had pitched the tenth and was out for the 11th as well. Frank Catalanotto singled to lead off the inning, but was then caught stealing second. Vernon Wells than came up and hit a bomb to left to win it.

I saw Papi's against the Angels in Game 3 of the '04 ALDS...sent all them halos home. It was only a taste of what was to come, of course!

Ron Lolich hitting what I believe was a pinch hit walk off grand slam for the Indians against the Boston Red Sox.
