  • *CY Young Award Discussion Thread*

I know many have won multiple MVP awards and many years there was no award given but with research who deserved the most awards?

Was Cy Young the best pitcher for the award to be named after or was his death the same year the reason?

I know Roger Clemens has won the most Cy Young awards but did he deserve them all or does he deserve more?

Purely speculative, but the award may have been named for him because, at the time, most wins may have been regarded as the sign for best pitcher of all time. It certainly was the easiest number to rationalize. I think the failure to figure out whether he was an old timer or should be on the regular ballot is what cost him in the first HOF election.

Pete Alexander could have very likely won it in 1911, 1914 with a hell of a lot of luck (though probably not), from 1915-1917, 1920, and possibly (though Haines would most likely get it) in 1927. Walter Johnson could have (maybe) won it in 1911, in 1912 (even over Wood), definitely in 13-16, possibly in 1919 over Cicotte, but very doubtful, certainly in 1924 and maybe also in 1925 since the Senators won the pennant.

Mathewson maybe in 1903 if he coulda beaten McGinnity, McGinnity definitely had the edge in 1904, even with Matty winning 33 (Iron Man had one hell of a year), but 1905 was all Matty's. !907 he had the numbers to compete, but they woulda given it to a Cub, 1908-11 he was either a lock or a contender, with Brown in 1909 and rookie Alexander in 1911 giving him a run for his money. 1912 they would have given it to Marquard because of the streak, but Matty would climb back in 1913, before losing it to Bill James and Dick Rudolph in 1914.

Cy Young could have had it in 1892, maybe in 1895 but only with a real close race with Bill Hoffer, who had a rookie season that would have made Alexander, Bedient, Gooden, and Fidrych jealous. Young would also get it for 1901-03, but that's pretty much it.

The award was spurred on by the death of Young in November 1955. The first award was issued in 1956. Had he not been the winningest pitcher in history they probably wouldn't have thought of it. When Walter Johnson died 9 years earlier they didn't think up any awards anmed after him.

I've got him deserving the most but not necessarily the exact ones he won.

Johnson "efinitely" over Ruth in 1916?

            I'm not sure about that.

I have Young ranked #2 all-time behind Johnson, so I don't have a problem naming an award after the second greatest pitcher ever, in my opinion. "Cy Young" also sounds a little more sophisticaded than "Walter Johnson." I like the award's name.

The guy who blogs at this site retroactively awarded Walter Johnson 9 Cy's (except he called them Mathewson awards, which works just as well). He gave 8 to Grove and 7 each to Clemens and Mathewson.
