I believe the most remembered feats in baseball (or any other sport) are the result of a classic dual. Roger Maris' homerun race in 1961 may be remembered more for his HR dual with teammate Mickey Mantle than for just breaking thru the historic "60" barrier. Part of what made the homerun race of 1998 so exciting was the HR dual between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
This is true of other sports, too. Sam Snead vs Ben Hogan in golf -- and later Arnie Palmer vs Jack Nicklaus.
I thought Phil Michelson would be a worthy foe of Tiger Woods, but so far that hasn't happened.
In the NBA we had Bill Russell vs Wilt Chamberlin -- and later Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson.
In baseball we remember Ted Williams vs Joe DiMaggio, or Willie Mays vs Hank Aaron.
In years past it was Lou Gehrig vs Jimmie Foxx -- or Nap Lajoie against Ty Cobb.
For one World Series, it was Roger Clemens vs Mike Piazza.
Do you agree that classic duals like these is a big part of what makes these players so honored and remembered?
What pairings are there in baseball today that might compare with these classic duals of the past?
