This Root article may explain why they said they did see him point to centerfield. Since he did point at the pitcher who of course is in line with centerfield, they believed he was pointing to centerfield.
I did want to believe that he did point, but I think what he did do was still some feat. When your down two strikes, no matter who you are, your in the hole. Yet, he was defiant, still talking, acknowledged the two called strikes with his fingers and then as verified by Cub catcher Hartnett......he held up one finger and then said..."It only takes one."Attached Files

What I call the unofficial called shot. According to Gehrig, some one on the bench called Babe fat stuff and some other names. Ruth said something to the effect......you guys are not going back to New York, this is it. This was his first at bat, he hit a 3 run homer to deep RCF.Attached Files

This is a story about "the bat", that we have seen in that picture of Babe leaning on the bat for support. His last appearance
at Yankee Stadium 1948. Bob never mentioned who his teammate was, that took and sold the bat after that game.
I do know he paid around 90 thousand plus dollars to buy the bat.............his own bat.Attached Files
