  • Thank you so much for the advice SoW

I'm afraid I would break my computer somehow so I'll not try anything fancy. Just thought it would be awesome to save and chop up some of the cool shots.

How did you embed it like that btw?

To embed, just have the URL copied, and select the little icon that looks like a film clip when you post on here.

I think the 12 foot figure is the most accurate, as it was stated in a NYT article after the fact.

Correct Sultan. My post #1624 was the park in 1923 and there was no distance marker in the park at that time. I placed it in there for the viewer. Some where I have a photo and almost sure the marker was just to the right of the word "out" in that ad message. I've read a few articles with different numbers for CF, 490-491-493-498, what ever, a long distance.

The only moving up of the plate I've seen was 10 feet before the 1924 season. Not to say your numbers of 12 and 15 are not correct, I have only seen the 10 foot article. That involved the "Bloody angle" at the stadium. I'm sure your familiar with all that. I've read a number of your posts in the parks section, great work.

          • Won't have very much more to say on the stadium, getting away from the thread theme, Babe Ruth.

But this one was way off, April 1923.
The author claims "small use seen for it."

            • More on the "called Shot' game. Some reports ball was hit past the flag pole and into the CF beachers.
The flag pole yes bu not in to the bleachers. The ball struck a ticket booth just outside the park.
Found a site that gives what appears to be very good measurments, a survey tool, some old overhead shiots of some parks.
Unable to use any before the 1960s because home plate not visable, different photo angle and the grandstand covering home plate, had to use one from the 1970s. The center field area chaged from 1932.

First pic was to check accuracy of survey tool. Very close actual distance 400 feet, survey tool 402 feet.

Pic #3, pic, overhead and what appears to be the ticket booth, not very far from the street.

Pic number 2, only an estmate of where the ticket booth was in 1932. We do know it was 436 feet to the fence in 1932.
I come up with around 470-480 feet. Impossible to know exactly where the booth was. Also working with a small photo and trying to get right on top of home plate to start measurment.

              • Probably signed more autographs than any athlete in history, as it's still one of the most valuable.

                    • I believe this is his third home run of the game centerfield.

Great shots. Still amazes me, looking at old pictures, the number of people wearing white shirts. No hitters backdrop and a sea of white. Couple that with no lighting system, no helmets...just absurd. Owners obviously wanted the extra dough, but so do today's owners; the difference is, today's owners understand the huge benefit of their hitters being able to see the ball.
