  • I'm amused at how many times I hear or see in print, that Babe had trouble with the slow stuff.
If true wouldn't it make sense to mix in lots of slow pitches. How does he hit 714 home runs and bat .342. if it's (supposed) that slow stuff gives him trouble.

Hornsby on, "how to pitch to Babe Ruth."

The dealer kept that picture of Babe in the window for a week or two. He was walked in his other two plate appearances.

I started in 1927 and worked my way back, using bbref.com's game logs. Here are the relevant games where Ruth would have faced Johnson, in relief, or otherwise. For 1915, there were no game logs, so I found the only game they went head to head. Hope this helps in trying to get his line against Big Train.

That helps a lot, Sultan. That'll be my next project. Lefty Grove and the Big Train were by far the best pitchers in the AL during Ruth's time(except for perhaps Ruth himself).

Sure your probably aware of it, that Ruth hit the most off of Johnson and tied with Gehrig and Greenberg with the most off of Grove, all with 9 home runs. And that Ruth did lose one homer off of Grove at Shibe in 1930, he would have been alone with 10 career off of Grove.

Admittedly, only a small sample, two pitchers but he had success with the long ball against two of the greatest and he never faced Grove until 1926.

            Good one!
Funny stuff about the guy getting knocked out from the ball...and it looks like his journal entry is correct about the game.
Here's the box score from that game: 7/30/1921: Indians 16 - Yankees 1

            • I think this was the one time they faced off in 1915, August 14.
Babe 2 for 3, 2 singles one run scored.

7/04/27, 0-2 worst case walter had 4 ip...., however, RUth was 2-4 for game

                  Missing 1915 season
As a pitcher, 1916-1918, he was 5-1 vs Johnson(excludes Johnson's 1 IP game in which he picked up the W), excludes Ruth's 4-3 victory in 1915.
As a hitter, see below. I went through each box score and looked at what the relievers did(walks, batters faced, etc).

For times when Ruth faced Johnson and I couldn't confirm the result, I assumed Ruth went 0-1 despite the fact that Ruth had additional walks and hits in that game. I.e, I just assumed that Ruth racked up those BB and Hits vs the relievers, which greatly reduces Ruth's results vs. Johnson.

note: Ruth was 3-24 with 2 BB and 0 HR vs Johnson in 1916-1917 when he was only a part time hitter. Once 1918 rolled around, Ruth hit Johnson very well.

Confirmed: exactly 9 HR, maximum 125 AB with minimum 26 BB and minimum 33 hits( min .264 avg, at least 1 HR every 13.88 AB).

in 1918 as a full time hitter, Ruth went 3-8 with 2 HR and 2 BB.
From 1918-1927, Ruth had at least 31 hits, 24 BB, max of 101 AB, and exactly 9 HRs. That's a min .307 avg and at least 1 HR every 11.22 ab

This was too time consuming. Luckily, Ruth vs Cobb as a pitcher only has 4 years(1916-1919 per BB reference). That project will come next weekend.

                    No prob -

5/9/18 was 1-1 with a double off Walter btw.

Talk about wanting to time travel to a game.

Ruth pitching 9.2 innings and giving up 2 ER (both on sacs), all while hitting cleanup and going 4-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, and a single.

Game tied going into the 10th and Ruth due up third. Enter Big Train, who just two days earlier, had given up the famous "War Garden" dinger to Babe.

Two quick outs and in steps Ruth, who laces his third double of the day to the scoreboard in right.

Stuffy McInnis, who was 0-3 with a BB and a sac steps in, and Ruth is thrown out trying to steal third base. Game over.

Unlike the circumstances surrounding the 1926 WS caught stealing, I don't see Ruth's logic on this one. Guy running from second unexpectedly can distract the hitter. Ruth was already in scoring position. There were 2 outs, so no sac fly opportunity if he gets to third. Not sure about the odds Walter would throw a wild pitch, but I have to think very low, so that doesn't warrant getting to third. I just don't see it. Great day at the plate and on the mound for Ruth, but bone-headed play to end it.

I did cover that one game earlier but entered the wrong date, my post #1196. I did go back to #1196 and made the correction.
Correct 2 for 3, one run scored and Johnson pitched complete game.

Thanks Shoeless. I now can include the 1915 outing.

Thus, Babe had at least 35 hits, exactly 9 HR, at least 26 BB, at most 128 AB. Thus, he hit at least .273 and had at least 1 HR every 14.22 AB. That's at least 26 BB in 48 games. Since 1918 when Ruth was a full-time hitter, Ruth walked at least 24 times in 36 games vs Johnson. And in 10 of those games, Johnson was yanked early costing him 37 innings, or about 4 games worth of innings. Clearly, Johnson pitched very carefully to Ruth.

Back to the pitching piece. The games in which a pitcher gave up an unearned run are in bold

8/14/15, Ruth wins 4-3, CG, according Babe in Red Stockings, umps potentially cost Ruth a shutout.
4/17/16, Ruth wins 5-1 CG,, not 2-1 like I mentioned earlier. Typo, 8 hitter by Ruth
6/01/16, Ruth wins 1-0, CG, Johnson gave up unearned run, 3 hitter by Ruth
8/15/16, Ruth wins 1-0, CG, 13 IP!!, 8 hitter by Ruth
9/09/16, Ruth wins 2-1, CG, Ruth gives up unearned run, 5 hitter by Ruth
                          5/07/17, Ruth wins 1-0, CG, 2 hitter,
10/3/17, Johnson wins 6-0, CG for Ruth, 11 hitter

Note: Ruth begged to pitch against Johnson in 1915. I love it! 5 out of 6 of Ruth's victories were by 1 run. And Ruth pitched CG in all of their outings. Ruth's 13 inning shutout was crazy. I believe Ruth only allowed 2 hits after the 8th ining. Similarly, Ruth really mowed down the team in the 1916 World Series game in which he won 2-1 in 14 IP. If I remember correctly, he only allowed 3 baserunners in that game after the 7th inning. Ruth apparently had a very durable arm.

                          • Speaking of clutch, game ending, walk off home runs.
Well, not under the old rules, before 1920 when it was changed.

July 8, 1918 score 0-0, runner on first and Babe hits one halfway up the RF bleachers, described as the longest ever hit at Fenway at that time.
Only under the old rule, the batter is only credited with as many bases as it takes the winning run to score.
With Strunk on first, Babe would only have to get to third base to bat in the winning run, he was credited with only a triple.
He tied for the lead in home runs in that year, with Tillie Walker, that could have been another home run title.

The one man gang, in the very next game July 10, the 9th was an off day then in a rain shortened game, his triple gives the Bosox a 2-0 win over Indians.
Two games, Bosox score only 3 runs, all batted in by Ruth.
July 11, three doubles help Bosox beat Chisox 4-0.
July 12, one double, two triples helps Bosox beat Chicago again, 4-0.
Talk about a one man gang.................and Harry Frazee sold him to the Yanks over the winter of 1919.

Ruth was 8-6 vs Tigers with 1 save.

This is interesting. Ruth must have HATED Cobb. Although Cobb hit Ruth very well, Ruth actually outhit Cobb in the games he was pitching in. Granted, Ruth didn't have to hit against a Babe Ruth every time. But still. This is crazy. Also, Ruth tossed a 1 hitter against Detroit. In that game, Ruth walked Cobb and beaned him. I bet is was a brushback pitch.

That one hitter an infield hit, was a hard grounder Babe knocked down, deflected to SS but the runner beat the throw.
That would have been really something, on top of all he did do, a no hitter, just missed.
You can check the stats, the Tigers were the best all arround hitting team in both leagues at that time.

Don't have the article in front of me but if I recall, 1920 or 1921, Babe asked to pitch to the Tigers, especially Cobb.
Cobb may have gotten one hit in that game but Babe struck him out in the 5th inning. Satisfied he then finished the game in th outfield.
Yanks won something like 13-8, Ruth with two long home runs.
