  • Patsy Dougherty vs. Johnny Bates

We're playing the "who is better than his most similar comp" game.

My starting point was Tommy Dowd, the guy with the lowest WAR among all batters with at least 5,000 plate appearances. I hope to work my way up to *somebody* vs. Babe Ruth. That'd be cool.

Which of these two players would you like to build your franchise around?

    Dougherty:

    1233 G
    5109 PA
    4558 AB
    678 R
    1294 H
    138 2B
    78 3B
    17 HR
    413 RBI
    261 SB
    378 BB
    458 K
    .284 BA
    .346 OBP
    .360 SLG
    .705 OPS
    117 OPS+
    1639 TB
    54 HBP
    119 SH
    22.6 WAR

    Bates:

    1154 G
    4597 PA
    3913 AB
    565 R
    1087 H
    167 2B
    73 3B
    25 HR
    417 RBI
    187 SB
    >= 9 CS
    503 BB
    428 K
    .278 BA
    .367 OBP
    .377 SLG
    .744 OPS
    122 OPS+
    1475 TB
    49 HBP
    132 SH
    19.3 WAR

If Dougherty wins, he will face his ninth-most similar comp. If Bates wins, he will face his most similar comp.

I went with Bates. He has a higher OPS and OPS+ and his BB:K ratio is much better. Their batting averages aren't that far apart and their WAR is close enough where I don't think, using that metric, that Dougherty can be considered that much better.

Dougherty leading the league in R x2, H and SB variously in three separate seasons made me vote for him.

We're all tied up! Someone want to break it?

It's a tie. So, if anyone wants to put a write-in to break it within the next couple hours, I'll take that. If not, I'll do a three-way poll.

One more shot for a write-in tiebreaker.
