  • Frank Howard and other baseball Big Men

I thought I'd break this off from the Josh Hamilton HR thread. So who are some of baseball history's best's "big" men? Frank Howard was HUGE!

And remember, "big" is relative. In 1900 6'3", 210 lbs was considerd very big. Today, it's almost normal for lots of positions.

Biggest biceps I have ever seen!Good thing he had an even disposition. The only time he became a bit heated was around 1952 when Rogers Hornsby was the Reds`manager.Big Klu and a teammate got into a shouting match."I hate Hornsby more than you do"!,"No,I hate Hornsby the most"...."No way,I hate Hornsby the most"....Good thing Hornsby left after two years!

He wasn't tall but Jimmie Foxx was very muscular for his time:

          This guy was just "big"

Eppa Rixey is listed as 6'5" 210 lbs.

We might say he looks lanky here, but in the context of the 20s he probably came across "big" in a lean, Randy Johnson way.

This photo of Chuck Klein has fascinated me for some time. He looks quite large compared to Jimmie Fox. Klein's shoulders, waist, and head look "extra large". Klein's BBR page lists him at 6'0" and only 185 lbs. I find that hard to believe.

The immortal Calvin Pickering. He's listed at 6'5", 255, but word was that he was about over 300 lbs with the Royals.

I saw Pickering at Fenway when he was with the O's...I pegged him at over 3 bills even then.
I was actually interested to see what he could do with the bat, he topped a roller in front of the plate and walked. After the walk, he tried to go in hard to second (maybe breaking up a DP?) and stopped
about 2 feet short of the bag after an awkward slide. My buddy and I were laughing our heads off, but then the trainer came out and the guy was really hurt...we felt pretty bad about that.

Dave Winfield and Dave Kingman were both tall and muscular of build, not nearly as thick as Frank Thomas but maybe in the mold of Frank Howard. I saw Belle and Thomas together on deck when I got really seats one night and it was amazing how big Belle looked before Thomas came out and how small afterwards.

Gehrig was a bit taller than Foxx and I think may have been even more powerfully built, just not so inclined to show it off as Jimmie. There's a shot of Lou showing off his bicep that is really impressive.

I wonder if there's something funny about the angle of that Klein/Foxx photo, I've never seen Klein look big in any other shot.

Don Baylor had a massive upper body and was fairly tall, he always reminded me of the tough guy bulldog from Tom and Jerry.

One of my favorites. If I could time machine myself anywhere, I'd go back to 1886 and watch him run out his 31 triples.
