What would ye knowledgeable baseball folk say are the greatest batteries of all-time, or to even narrow the discussion further, by decade (going back to the '70s, and by '70s, I mean the 1870s)? They don't have to be an established pair by any means, although I'd like to leave relief pitchers out of the discussion.

Greatest Battery by Decade?

I would say Lefty Grove and Mickey Cochrane but they really didnt play together long enough in the 20's or 30's. Although they prob still would be the best in both decades."(Shoeless Joe Jackson's fall from grace is one of the real tragedies of baseball. I always thought he was more sinned against than sinning." -- Connie Mack
"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

Are you talking about for the decade as a whole, or for a single season?
Johan Santana and Joe Mauer might be a good choice for the 2000's. The 2006 season was a great one for both of them.
Dwight Gooden and Gary Carter in '85 were a pretty tough combo. For the decade, I can't think of any better choices offhand.

1950s Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

Pettitte and Posada for the 2000s.
I would say Maddux and Javy Lopez for the 90s, but I think Maddux usually used a personal catcher. My top 10 players:

In the 1900s, I thought of Roger Bresnahan and Christy Mathewson.
Roger came in out of the outfield to catch, just as Mathewson his his stride as a pitcher.Your Second Base Coach
Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey started 833 times and the Dodgers went 498-335, for a .598 winning percentage. That’s equal to a team going 97-65 over a season. On those occasions when at least one of them missed his start, the Dodgers were 306-267-1, which is a .534 clip. That works out to a team going 87-75. So having all four of them added 10 wins to the Dodgers per year.

In the 1910s, I think of Chief Meyers and Ray Schalk behind the dish, maybe Wally Schang.
Now Meyers also played with the Giants, so Mathewson is in the discussion for two decade in a row.
Ed Cicotte and Ray Schalk is also a good choice.
Wally Schang should have had Chief Bender for a few years, but alas....
Walter Johnson and ANYBODY is a good pick. In that decade, "anybody" was four different guys, including one named John Henry.Your Second Base Coach
