  • Micah Owings. Others?

    I know this is an anomaly, but I'm wonder if there have been others...

    Micah Owings is a full-time pitcher. He has never played any other position in the majors.
    Yet his pWAR is completely dwarfed by his batting WAR:
    WAR = 3.2
    pWAR = 0.2

    Has there ever been another pitcher like this?

    Doc Crandall came pretty darned close.

    5. Willie Mays
    6. Alex Rodriguez
    7. Hank Aaron
    8. Honus Wagner
    9. Lou Gehrig
    10. Mickey Mantle

      Owings career batting line:

      219 PA, .283/.310/.502, 9 HR, 35 RBI, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 27 R, 8 BB, 72 K

      Owings can mash.

        He must have been used as a pinch hitter pretty often.

          First name that came to mind, among recent players, was Tim Lollar. Sure enough:

          WAR = 3.1
          pWAR = 1.8

          After doing a bit of searching, I also found Blue Moon Odom

          WAR = 3.4
          pWAR = 0.2

          Also ran across Brandon Backe, who I've never heard of. Probably many others you could find with short careers like his.

              Looking for pitchers whose batting is more valuable than their own pitching.

              Ferrell was a good batter, but most of his value still came from pitching.

                Wow. I had assumed Odom was a better pitcher than this. Maybe it was just the name that sparkled.

                  You probably thought he was better because he actually had a few very good seasons, and was an all star two years in a row. Unfortunately he was terrible outside of those few seasons. He had 8 (!) seasons out of 12 with either 0 or negative WAR totals, just based on his pitching
