  • For the Fun Of It--An All-Time MLB FRANCHISE, IF You Could Build One

I know this has been done before--heck, I did a version a few years back where we voted for every position--but it's always a blast and relatively quick to do, and then you can have fun talking on and on about it...

An All-Time MLB Team. For a bit more fun this time, let's try for a full Franchise:

    1. A 25-Man Roster (start date for players 1903) including:

--AT LEAST 2 players at every position C/1B/2B/SS/3B
--5 OFs (Any mixture of CF/LF/RF is fine, so long as there is at least one of each on the team)
--One of these 15 position players can be in the lineup as a DH
--7 Starting Pitchers (I'd do 5, but that seems pretty impossible to narrow down...consider it a 5-Man Rotation and then 2 really, really "long-relief" men)
--3 Relievers, AT LEAST one of them being a closer

    2. 1 Manager and 2 Assistant managers

    3. 1. General Manager

    4. 1 Owner (if you want to do an Ownership Family, that's fine)

    5. 3 Broadcasters, 2 for TV, 1 for Radio

    6. Further, it's my own stigma, maybe, but any CONFIRMED or ADMITTED steroid users are out; if it's unconfirmed, they can have as much suspicion as...well, you can think of those players I mean...but unless they've been nailed in a test (I'll consider a leaked test a la being nailed here) or have admitted to using, they're fair game.

    7. Along those same "cheater" lines, to be fair, I'll say no players banned by MLB, so that unfortunately means Shoeless Joe, Eddie Cicotte, and Pete Rose, of course (though if you want to add them "informally" to your "farm teams" at the end of your list with an all-too-appropriate asterisk, go right ahead, it'd be interesting who will consider them and who won't.)

    8. As a final note, please say what team each of your players came from, as it were.

    Let's have at it!

I tried to not choose too many players from one team and have players from many eras. This was fun though.

Oh hell, I can't stand it--

Have to change mine to put Mike Piazza in on the bench instead of Yogi.

Yogi's great, but after the Best Ever with Bench, it's power batter vs. power batter, and not only does Piazza win there...

He's my favorite player of all-time, got me into baseball when I was in Little League...he's how I came to love the Mets--I saw him here in Southern California playing for the Dodgers, he was traded to the Marlins...I wasn't set in my baseball loyalties yet, so I was a Marlins fan for all of one week...

And then he came to the Mets--and I've been true to the Orange and Blue ever since.

Never had a positive test, never had a power spike, he declined how an aging player should, didn't hit 73 HRs at 37 years of age or so...

And he was simply one of the best pure hitters of his era (Ted Williams himself helped him with his swing as a kid) and I can't help it, have to take him! (Sorry Yogi, love ya too!)

Serious question to those that placed Ted Williams in their outfield and Babe Ruth as their DH. Why? Personally, I would reverse them, but I still want to know your reasoning.

Petco and Oakland Coliseum will do that to ya.

Of course, that's a joke, but the fact that he never failed a test doesn't prove he never juiced. His best years were well behind him when the testing program was implemented. I have nothing againt Piazza. I actually like him. But I would be very surprised if he wasn't a steroid user.

I put Ruth at DH because i'd rather have Cobb in rightfield and where else am I gonna put Ruth. Williams cant play right or center
Thanks for answering. The others that went in that direction didn't answer me.

Anyway, I was thinking along the lines of Cobb, Mays, and Ruth in the outfield with Williams as the DH.

I would go with that if Cobb qualified as a leftfielder but I think Cobb played primarily in center and rightfield. Although if this really was a real team I would put Cobb in left anyways.
