  • Best MLB Cap of all-time

Esquire had some writers weigh in.

We asked some of the best sportswriters and most stylish not-sportswriters we know for their picks. Discuss.

I don't think it's fair to use minor league caps, because that just opens Pandora's box.

My five favorite MLB hats off the top of my head:

    (1) Orioles (the current one they brought back this year).
    (2) Expos tri-panel
    (3) Brewers tri-panel with the MB glove.
    (4) Pirates pill box hat
    (5) New York Giants hat - just screams nostalgia, doesn't it? Close call with the old Brooklyn Dodgers hats.

    How about you guys?

I like the ones you mentioned except the Pirates pill box - for some reason never liked that one. I also like the early century caps like the NY Highlanders and Giants. The Indians used to have one with a different (yellow ?) Indian with more hooked nose. That was cool too

I'm a Yankees fan, but in my opinion the greatest MLB cap of all time is the Cleveland Indians.

I agree with every one of these choices! Others could apply, but these are definite winners.

I don't know if anybody else has thought this, but the pillbox hats they brought back in the 70s... I like the Pirates, but the Cardinals ones never really did it for me...

That logo never appeared on an Indians hat.

Even 30+ years later those Pirates hats still rock!

Those Cardinals hats do look a bit odd.

They even had those white stripes on their batting helmets!

Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

I think it's because the Cards caps clashed with the baby/powder blue uniforms. The Pirates hats always matched the uniforms, both black and yellow.

                      .
Hands down, I think it was the Brewers cap with the "mb" in the shape of a baseball glove, with a yellow-stitched baseball inside the "b." I'm not sure anything will ever beat that one in my book.

                      .
                      .

                      Put it in the books.

Btw, the NY Giants cap is just the Mets cap in blue instead of black. And that blue is Dodger blue, heh.
                        Put it in the books.

Our memories of a favorite cap or uniform are often based on team achievement, good or bad. Pirate fans have positive memories of the pillboxes because of the considerable on-field success during that era. Interesting fact, the original mustard pillboxes were issued in spring training 1976 sans the striping. Someone must have noticed how bad that looked, so the change was added before the regular season.
