I'm going to have to ponder this one. Dougherty has the OPS+ advantage and black ink. Bumbry the WAR and presumably the caliber of competition of the 70s-80s AL was higher than the newly formed AL in the 00s.

I went with Dougherty on this one, though it was really, really close.

I think I will go with Dougherty as well. Bumbry seemed to have gotten over the injruy/platoon issues just when he was coming past his prime. Bumbry gets a big boost on baserunning. In fact his runs as I figure it on WAR are 40 batting 20 baserunning 15 (avoiding) DPs. Dougerty either from lack of data or otherwise is 92 batting 3 baserunning (or is it base on error) 0 on DPs. So despite a qualm about the league quality the difference between them is too large. My take is Dougherty is one of the best OFs in the league Bumbry some years might be in the mix for next best 5-6 CF in the AL.

This one was a tough decision for me. I actually made a list of 'points' where I weighed various aspects of their careers to help decide which was better. Bumbry actually ended up with one more point than did Dougherty, but I went with Dougherty nevertheless.
