I thought it would be interesting to see if an Oklahoma lead miner's son ended up being a more valuable presence on the ball field than the elite Hall of Famer his dad named him for. I don't think it's all that certain that he did, but I'm curious as to what other people think (and why).

I believe that Cochrane's contribution excede that of the stats he presented. He was the fearless leader on all thos A's and Tigers teams, who had players with better stats. Something similar happens to Berra and Bench, but these two were clearly exceded by Mantle and Morgan respectively on their team.

Mantle is an all time hitter (the new trend), period.

    Is it really that one-sided?

One of these guys has a career OBP of .421 (17th all time)

The other has a career OBP of .419 (18th all time).

One has a career BA of .320 (55th all time); the other has a career BA of .298 (232nd all time).

Both are serious contenders for Best Ever at a key position.

One was voted MVP 3 times; the other won 2 MVPs.

One was an inspirational leader known for his fiery take-no-prisoners style of play. The other was not.

--I probably have Cochrane rated higher than anyone else who played so little, excepting Jackie Robinson. Game for game I'm not sure I wouldn't rather have Mickey the senior, but even for a catcher his career was fairly short. Mantle wins pretty easily.

I always thought of Cochrane as the second best catcher of alltime but I would pick Mantle as the better player. It's probably closer than what I think though.

Mickey Charles Mantle, as everyone knows, was named after Gordon Stanley Cochrane. They were both outstanding players; but, which one would you say was better, considering all aspects of their contributions on the field?
