Where does Earl Weaver rank as great baseball managers?

I would say top 10. He did start pitch counts. Not sure if that was a good thing though.

        extremely high

very smart at arranging a team and managing a game

one of my personal favorites (not for his antics, but for his managing)

he used to keep notes and figures on head to head matchups (before these were common knowledge)

developed great pitching staffs and understood the importance of defense at key positions

Earl got tremendous production out of some of his platoon combos.

I always wondered if he would have won the 1983 World Series had he been the manager. He was somewhat known for blowing WS games. Then again his main problem woulda been the 83 Whitesox and if he got by them Mickey Mouse coulda beaten the 1983 Phillies.

              Certainly he ranks very high.

He understood that baseball was a long season. It's a game of attrition. In the long run, one wins with fielding, power hitting, and pitching. He knew how to set up his team and then get out of it's way.

It was funny when he had the great Baltimore teams 1969-1971 it was said about him anyone could win with those great players

then in the mid to late 70s the same thing was said of those great Yankee teams while Weaver kept plugging away

it is often forgotten but not very many managers would have considered making a SS out of a tall muscular 6' 4" 3B in 1982, seems to have worked out pretty well

the pitching he deveoped or made better

McNally Palmer Cuellar Dobson Torrez Flanagan McGregor D. Martinez Stone etc.
