  • Rank these 80s pitchers

The 80s was a weird time for pitchers, as it seemed to be dominated by pitching, but failed to have any true all time greats, or even HOFers. This is in direct opposition to the era before it (many HOF pitchers) and after it (a number of all time greats). Guys seemed to flame out early, or have just a handful of great seasons. Strangely, jack Morris appears to be the only one from this era with a chance to make the HOF, and he didn't have the great seasons that the others had.

How would you rank these pitchers with regards to HOF worthiness?

    DaveSteib
    Frank Viola
    Orel Hershiser
    RickReuschel
    Bret Saberhagen
    DwightGooden
    David Cone
    JoseRijo
    Jack Morris
    Jimmy Key
Kevin Appier (OK he's an early 90s guy, but I threw him in there).

just wonder why theses guys, but not Bob Welch, Clemens, Valenzuela, John Tudor, etc...

Appier played 1 entire month in 1989, and that's all.
Rijo was a part-time reliever and losing pitcher in the 80s.

Really, none of them should be in the Hall.
David Cone is the closest; he's just under my line. He's actually the best starter I wouldn't put in the Hall.
If someone wants to put Jack Morris in the Hall, I won't quibble. I just won't be pushing much for him.

      David Cone
      Jack Morris

These pitchers were very good, but they are not Hall material or have not done enough.

      Bret Saberhagen
      Dwight Gooden
      Orel Hershiser
      Dave Steib
      Rick Reuschel

      No

      Frank Viola
      Jimmy Key

I know he had some really good seasons, but I just have to place him a rung lower than Viola & Key.

      Kevin Appier

Too few IPs. <2000. Barely over 1700 as a starter.

      Jose Rijo

        Stieb and Cone are close

Hershiser, Gooden and Saberhagen and next

        Morris, Reuschel, Key and Viola

        Appier
        Rijo

thats how I would group them with Morris possibly moving to the bottom rung of the first group.

if you did peak it goes:
        Gooden

        Cone/Saberhagen

        Hershiser

        everyone else
