  • Terry Puhl vs. John Titus

We're playing the "who is better than his most similar comp" game.

My starting point was Tommy Dowd, the guy with the lowest WAR among all batters with at least 5,000 plate appearances. I hope to work my way up to *somebody* vs. Babe Ruth. That'd be cool.

Which of these players would you like to build your franchise around?

    Puhl:

    1531 G
    5480 PA
    4855 AB
    676 R
    1361 H
    226 2B
    56 3B
    62 HR
    435 RBI
    217 SB
    99 CS
    505 BB
    507 K
    .280 BA
    .349 OBP
    .388 SLG
    .737 OPS
    112 OPS+
    1885 TB
    59 GDP
    26 HBP
    57 SH
    36 SF
    49 IBB
    26.2 WAR

    Titus:

    1402 G
    5818 PA
    4960 AB
    738 R
    1401 H
    253 2B
    72 3B
    38 HR
    561 RBI
    140 SB
    >=7 CS
    620 BB
    386 K
    .282 BA
    .373 OBP
    .385 SLG
    .758 OPS
    127 OPS+
    1912 TB
    94 HBP
    144 SF
    27.9 WAR

If Puhl wins, he will face his ninth-most similar comp. If Titus wins, he will face his most similar comp.

    I went with Titus

Interesting we may have a unanimous winner yet we barely know who he is beyond the line of numbers up above. I think Titus was a deadball era OF for the Phillies, but I haven't looked as such stuff is quite some time (and am too lazy to check BRef rather than type these few sentences).

John Titus was kind of a dandy, I think. He was the last player of the early 20th century to sport an enormous handlebar mustache. I dimly remember an article about him which mentioned that his nickname was "Tight Pants Titus." I think Bill James mentioned that he chewed a toothpick to keep tobacco from sticking to his teeth (always the fashion plate, John) but abandoned it when he learned he was tipping pitchers by its position when he intended to swing.

That's a lot more than I know about Terry Puhl.
Indeed the first step toward finding out is to acknowledge you do not satisfactorily know already; so that no blight can so surely arrest all intellectual growth as the blight of cocksureness.--CS Peirce

It's also a lot more than I knew about John Titus two minutes ago. Thanks.
