  • Baseball Royalty: Ranking Baseball Families

We see a lot of ranking projects on this forum but I don't believe I've seen one for families of people. I'd like to try that.

Please nominate families of men and women that included more than one person who contributed to the game of professional baseball as we know it. They could include players, owners, executives, umpires, or any other profession with a direct impact on the game. If you nominate a family please list each family member of relevance that you know of.

After we construct a list of nominees, I would like to rank the top 25 royal families of the game of baseball.

The Ripken's - Cal Jr played for the Baltimore Orioles and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame and his brother Billy also played for the Orioles and Rangers. Cal Sr managed the Baltimore Orioles.

The Bondses. Bobby and Barry were both huge stars on the field.

The MacPhails. Larry and Lee are both Hall of Famers, and Andy contributed to two World Series championship teams.

The Ripkens. Cal Sr. coined the phrase "The Oriole Way," Cal Jr. is baseball's all-time iron man, and Billy was a solid player too, with one of the most famous baseball card mishaps ever.

The Griffeys. Kens Sr. and Jr.. don't quite match the star power of the Bondses, but they were both stars in their own rights.

The Boones. Ray was perhaps the best third baseman in the AL in the mid-50's, Bob once held the all-time games caught record, Bret had some huge seasons, and Aaron's homer won the pennant for the 2003 Yankees.

The Alous. Felipe, Jesus and Matty made up the first generation, followed by Moises and cousin Mel Rojas in the next generation.

The Sewells. They have Hall of Famer Joe, pennant-winning manager Luke, one-game wonder Tommy, and cousin Rip, famous for the "eephus" pitch.

The Boyers. Ken and Clete were both among the finest third basemen of their day, and brother Cloyd played too.

The Carays. Harry was a legend, Skip was beloved by many Brave fans, and Chip has managed to stick around for a while. According to Wikipedia, Chip has a brother named Josh who's been a minor league announcer.

The Veecks. Bill Sr. was a fine executive for the Cubs, Bill Jr. was a crazy innovator and Hall of Famer, and Mike was one of the people behind Disco Demolition Night, which now serves as an example of what not to do for a promotional stunt.

The Hairstons. Sam was a Negro league star and later a scout for the White Sox, his sons Jerry and John were both major leaguers, with Jerry a notable pinch-hitter, and the current generation has Jerry Jr. and Scott in the majors.

The Bells: Gus was an all star OF in the 1950s, son Buddy we all know from the 70s and 80s and then grandson David was a starting 3B just recently (there may be another in the third generation that I forgot)

The Delahantys - hard to top a family with five brothers playing major league ball. Ed was a legit Hall of Famer, Jim a good second baseman, and Frank, Joe, and Tom all managed to play for at least three years in the majors.

The Perrys - Gaylord is a solid Hall of Famer with two Cy Young awards. Jim won over 200 games - his closest comparisons are Milt Pappas and Charley Root.

Forsch: Ken and Bob Forsch had long careers as starting pitchers in the 70s-80s.
Meusel: Irish and Bob were both slugging COFs in the 1920s. IIRC Irish, who played mainly for the Giants led the NL in RBI. Bob was, of course, a vital part of the Ruth/Gehrig Yankees and no slouch at the plate while featuring in many "best arm of all time" conversations.
Cooper: Walker and Mort were a battery for the Cardinals in and around the War Years for the Cardinals before Walker became a Giant. Each could claim to be the predominant NL player at their position for much (or at least a part of) the 40s.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the DiMaggio brothers yet.

The Bonds father-son combo is the best. While many would disagree, I think both of them should be in the HOF.

Steve Lombardozzi played from 1985-1990. His son, also Steve Lombardozzi, has played for the Nationals the past two years.

                    1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”
