  • John Titus vs. Amos Strunk

We're playing the "who is better than his most similar comp" game.

My starting point was Tommy Dowd, the guy with the lowest WAR among all batters with at least 5,000 plate appearances. I hope to work my way up to *somebody* vs. Babe Ruth. That'd be cool.

Which of these players would you like to build your franchise around?

    Titus:

    1402 G
    5818 PA
    4960 AB
    738 R
    1401 H
    253 2B
    72 3B
    38 HR
    561 RBI
    140 SB

    620 BB
    386 K
    .282 BA
    .373 OBP
    .385 SLG
    .758 OPS
    127 OPS+
    1912 TB
    94 HBP
    144 SF
    27.9 WAR

    Strunk:

    1512 G
    5810 PA
    4999 AB
    696 R
    1418 H
    213 2B
    96 3B
    15 HR
    530 RBI
    185 SB
    >= 100 CS
    573 BB
    453 K
    .284 BA
    .359 OBP
    .374 SLG
    .732 OPS
    112 OPS+
    1868 TB
    12 HBP
    219 SH
    24.4 WAR

If Titus wins, he will face his third-most similar comp. If Strunk wins, he will face his ninth-most similar comp.

This one goes to Titus, though Strunk isn't that much worse of a player. His OPS+ is what gets him my vote however - it is 127, to Strunk's 112.

Two very good players, Titus a well-respected right fielder, Strunk an excellent center fielder. You can't fit a knife edge between their batting stats, but Titus played in the depths of the dead ball era, and Strunk a little later. I'm going with Titus, but just because I like him. He's kind of an Al Kaline precursor, a fine player with absolutely no holes in his game. He started late and at the end had two broken legs and a fractured skull, but he ciuld still hit.
Indeed the first step toward finding out is to acknowledge you do not satisfactorily know already; so that no blight can so surely arrest all intellectual growth as the blight of cocksureness.--CS Peirce

I went with Titus on this one too.

Titus here as well. Strunk was actually better than I thought he would be when I saw the match-up.
