John Titus vs. Elmer Valo

Valo barely edged Titus, four votes to three. That has to be one of the closest matchups we've had to date.

Valo is right up there among the "most competitive players ever". Member Emeritus of the "I Laugh at Outfield Walls" Club. If he hadn't come off second best in a meeting with the wall in Cleveland early in the 1953 season, that streak that started in 1946 would probably have lasted several years longer. As late as 1960, aged 39 and a full time pinch hitter, he posted a team-best .424 OBP (in 85 PA) for Washington.

I went with Elmer Valo, especially if the Valo I'd be getting is the 1946 to 1952 version. The guy walked a ton, rarely struck out, had some speed and could hit for average. Titus could as well, but it's Valo's superhuman walking ability that puts him on top.

Ooh, this is a tough one for me. Elmer Valo is one of my favorite players. But despite his .360 season, he was a great pinch hitter and reserve, while Titus was a really good full-timer.

We're playing the "who is better than his most similar comp" game.
My starting point was Tommy Dowd, the guy with the lowest WAR among all batters with at least 5,000 plate appearances. I hope to work my way up to *somebody* vs. Babe Ruth. That'd be cool.
