  • Last player to bat without a batting helmet

I didn't know that that last to player to not wear a batting helmet was Bob Montgomery in 1979. I didn't know it was so recent.

Would you step in against a 95 mph fastball without wearing a hard hat? Bruce Markusen looks back at three men who made just that choice in this week's Confidential.

Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

      79'!! Wow.

What about last without a glove...? Last legal spitballer I've read about. Last team to break the color barrier, last AL pitcher to hit a homer before the DH.

Could have some fun with this...
"Herman Franks to Sal Yvars to Bobby Thomson. Ralph Branca to Bobby Thomson to Helen Rita... cue Russ Hodges."

Those players were all wearing a hard insert inside their caps instead of a helmet. At the very least it would have to make you use two different caps, one when you're hitting and another smaller one when you're in the field.

Are there any photos of those inserts? Did they have a spongy layer or something like Styrofoam between the insert and the batter's head?
