  • Tillie Walker vs. Al Cowens

We're playing the "who is better than his most similar comparison" (on Baseball-Reference) game.

My starting point was Tommy Dowd, the guy with the lowest WAR among all batters with at least 5,000 plate appearances. I hope to work my way up to *somebody* vs. Babe Ruth. That'd be cool.

Which of these players would you like to build your franchise around?

    Walker:

    1421 G
    5661 PA
    5067 AB
    696 R
    1423 H
    244 2B
    71 3B
    118 HR
    679 RBI
    129 SB
    >=48 CS
    416 BB
    584 K
    .281 BA
    .339 OBP
    .427 SLG
    .766 OPS
    115 OPS+
    2163 TB
    31 HBP
    154 SH
    22.3 WAR

    Cowens:

    1584 G
    6038 PA
    5534 AB
    704 R
    1494 H
    276 2B
    68 3B
    108 HR
    717 RBI
    120 SB
    74 CS
    389 BB
    659 K
    .270 BA
    .319 OBP
    .403 SLG
    .722 OPS
    99 OPS+
    2230 TB
    141 GDP
    34 HBP
    28 SH
    53 SF
    28 IBB
    12.4 WAR

If Walker wins, he will face his fourth-most similar comp. If Cowens wins, he will face his third-most similar comp.

I liked Al, always remembered that one real big yr he had '77, the big glasses, and the Ed Farmer wars. Don't remember the man's glove. He was prob a shade better than Tilly.

Cowens had a great arm and that one great year. It seemd he played after that with teams expecting a repeat, KC, Cal, Det, that never camer. Though in all fairness he did suffer a pretty bad injury when hit by a pitch by Farmer in 1979, which may or may not have played a part in his diminishment at the plate.

Sorry, can't see the case for Cowens.
Indeed the first step toward finding out is to acknowledge you do not satisfactorily know already; so that no blight can so surely arrest all intellectual growth as the blight of cocksureness.--CS Peirce
