  • Tillie Walker vs. Wally Moon

We're playing the "who is better than his most similar comparison" (on Baseball-Reference) game.

My starting point was Tommy Dowd, the guy with the lowest WAR among all batters with at least 5,000 plate appearances. I hope to work my way up to *somebody* vs. Babe Ruth. That'd be cool.

Which of these players would you like to build your franchise around?

    Walker:

    1421 G
    5661 PA
    5067 AB
    696 R
    1423 H
    244 2B
    71 3B
    118 HR
    679 RBI
    129 SB
    >=48 CS
    416 BB
    584 K
    .281 BA
    .339 OBP
    .427 SLG
    .766 OPS
    115 OPS+
    2163 TB
    31 HBP
    154 SH
    22.3 WAR

    Moon:

    1457 G
    5566 PA
    4843 AB
    737 R
    1399 H
    212 2B
    60 3B
    142 HR
    661 RBI
    89 SB
    68 CS
    644 BB
    591 K
    .289 BA
    .371 OBP
    .445 SLG
    .817 OPS
    118 OPS+
    2157 TB
    121 GDP
    13 HBP
    31 SH
    35 SF
    >= 56 IBB
    22.3 WAR

If Walker wins, he will face his fifth-most similar comp. If Moon wins, he will face his second-most similar comp.

This one is tough. I normally vote right after I post the poll, but I need to see the arguments before casting my vote.

Both these guys had almost freakish home/road power splits with their final teams. While I think Walker was maybe more dominant, Moon was very good himself. I give Moon the edge albeit ever so slightly.

This one is really a toss up for me. I look at a bunch of factors to make my decision, and they're both coming out pretty even.

Wally Moon had slightly better 162-game averages in his best years (1954-1961) than did Walker in his best years (1914-1922).

        BUT

It looks like Walker had better 162 game averages overall, just by a hair.

        BUT

Wally Moon has a higher OPS and OPS+.

        BUT

Tillie Walker has better black and grey ink.

        BUT

Wally Moon had a better BB:K ratio.

        BUT

Tillie Walker was more consistent, with a high of six straight 100+ OPS+ years, opposed to Moon's high of four straight.

That said, I think I'm going to go with Moon as well. Walker led the league in outfield errors three times, while Moon never led the league in outfield errors. Kind of a strange deciding factor, but that poor defensive showing by Walker wouldn't do well on my team...defense wins games and so on.

Which is why I'm voting for Tillie Walker, who lead the league in outfield assists three times and is # 38 in career outfield assists, as opposed to Wally Moon who never lead the league in OF assists and is not in the top 400 for his career.

A toss up, but I vote for Moon, who led the 59 Dodgers to one of the most improbable world championships ever. Thanks, Wally.

Surprised this week has gone by so fast. Only a couple days left.
