I was watching Prime 9 last night. The list:

    1. Edgar Martinez
    2. Frank Thomas
    3. David Ortiz
    4. Paul Molitor
    5. Harold Baines
    6. Hal McRae
    7. Don Baylor

    9. Brian Downing

    Thoughts?
"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

They got the main ones, but there's only so many players who DH'ed even 500 games.

          Code:

          Rk Player OPS+ From To
          1 Frank Thomas 156 1990 2008
          2 Jim Thome 147 1991 2012
          3 Edgar Martinez 147 1987 2004
          4 Jason Giambi 141 1995 2012
          5 Vladimir Guerrero 140 1996 2011
          6 Reggie Jackson 139 1967 1987
          7 David Ortiz 138 1997 2012
          8 Travis Hafner 137 2002 2012
          9 George Brett 135 1973 1993
          10 Jose Canseco 132 1985 2001
          11 Rico Carty 132 1963 1979
          12 Greg Luzinski 130 1970 1984
          13 Eddie Murray 129 1977 1997
          14 Jim Rice 128 1974 1989
          15 Oscar Gamble 127 1969 1985
          16 Cliff Johnson 125 1972 1986
          17 Hal McRae 123 1968 1987
          18 Andre Thornton 123 1973 1987
          19 Paul Molitor 122 1978 1998
          20 Brian Downing 122 1973 1992
          21 Harold Baines 121 1980 2001
          22 Chili Davis 121 1981 1999
          23 Willie Horton 120 1963 1980
          24 Cecil Fielder 119 1985 1998
          25 Mike Sweeney 118 1995 2010
          26 Don Baylor 118 1970 1988
Historically, it's been a sporadic role for individuals.

And actually, since the DH began, 1B in the AL have been bigger boppers than DHs.

the DH is used as an off day a lot in these days. especially in aging teams like the yankees there are 3-4 players who regularly need off days an the DH is a nice way to achieve that and still keep their bat in the lineup. a pure DH robs you a lot of roser flexibility. a lot of teams like to use multi position players.

the only reason to use a full time DH is when you have an old/injury prone guy who is a very good hitter but terrible defender.
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

Thome is not a career DH IMO. He didn't DH full-time until his age 35 season.
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

Historically, it seems less than half of AL teams ever use a real full-time DH.

This shows how many players DH'ed 100+ games each season. We can see that this past season, only 2 players DH'ed 100+ games.

Dave Parker put up some good counting numbers as a DH. I think he was voted top DH at least two of the three years he was in the AL.
Dave Bill Tom George Mark Bob Ernie Soupy Dick Alex Sparky
Joe Gary MCA Emanuel Sonny Dave Earl Stan

Gates Philip John Warrior Rik Casey Tony Horace

As much as a love Edgar Martinez, I think Thomas should have been #1. He was a better hitter than Edgar and played most his career at DH.
                      My top 10 players:

                      1. Babe Ruth
                      2. Barry Bonds
                      3. Ty Cobb
                      4. Ted Williams
                      5. Willie Mays
                      6. Alex Rodriguez
                      7. Hank Aaron
                      8. Honus Wagner
                      9. Lou Gehrig
                      10. Mickey Mantle

Well, he won 1 Silver Slugger award as a DH.

And I didn't know this, but Julio Franco won a Silver Slugger as a DH once too.

                          No, he's a recent full-timer though.
