  • Greatest Seasons by Non-HOFers

I thought it might be fun to list our top 5 single-seasons since 1900 for position players who were never elected to the Hall of Fame. For the purposes of this thread, Pete Rose and Joe Jackson do not count as they out of the Hall for reasons unrelated to performance. I also don't want to include active players or guys like Bonds, McGwire, Bagwell etc.,who recently became eligible for election and might be elected in the not too distant future. So for the purposes of this thread, please only include players whose careers ended before the year 2000.

    Here's my top 5 list:
Best seasons by non-HOFers who last played prior to 2000

    1. Norm Cash 1961
.361/.487/.662, 201 OPS+. A truly historic season which was overshadowed by Maris and Mantle.
    2. Dick Allen 1972
Absolutely dominant season during a pitcher-friendly year. League averages were .239/.306/.343. Allen hit .308/.420/.603
    3. Fred Lynn 1979
.333/.423/.637, led league in BA, OBP, and SLG, 176 OPS+ led league too. Won Gold Glove in CF.
    4. Al Rosen 1953
Led league in HR, RBI, runs scored, SLG, OPS+, TB, WAR and other categories, while playing above-average defense at third base.
    5. Pete Rieser 1941
Led league in BA, SLG, runs scored, doubles, triples, OPS+, total bases and WAR, along with good defense in CF

There were so many great seasons to consider, from Maris in '61 to George Foster in '77 to Mattingly in '86 and Trammell in '87. It wasn't easy, but these are the five that I've chosen.

I'd love to see some of your top-5 lists.

Darin Erstad's 2000 season comes to mind. Batting leadoff he hit:

    .355/.409/.541, 137 OPS+, 240 H, 25 HR, 100 RBI, 121 R, 39 doubles, 6 triples, 28 SB, 8.2 WAR
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

Great season. He played until 2009, though.

True, But Erstad has zero shot at being inducted to the HoF. I didn't read the entire OP. Oops! Sorry about that.

Nice one. His teammate, Will Clark wasn't too shabby that year either.

Check out this complete list of teammates since 1900 with an OPS+ of 175 or better.

Yeah, you're right but I'd really like to avoid the whole "steroid era" in general. Lots of Looney Tunes seasons from the 90's and early 00's by guys who will never be seriously considered for the Hall of Fame (Brady Anderson, Ken Caminiti, Richard Hidalgo, and Luis Gonzalez come to mind...)

If we lower the minimum to 170, we can add:

Pujols and Edmonds with the 2004 Cardinals
Medwick and Mize with 1937 Cardinals

Lower it again to 165 and we add:

Griffey and Edgar with the 1997 Mariners
Cepeda and Mays with the 1963 Giants
                    Mantle and Maris in 1961
Aaron and Mathews with the 1959 Braves
Dimaggio and Gehrig with the 1937 Yankees
Cobb and Heilmann with the 1921 and 1922 Tigers
Lajoie and Hickman with Cleveland in 1902

Even lowering it down to 165 OPS+ the list is still pretty short. I checked and Willie Mays and Willie McCovey never had their respective high OPS+ seasons at the same time. Their best seasons were:

                      1965 Mays (185 OPS+), McCovey (153 OPS+)
                      1966 McCovey (163 OPS+), Mays (149 OPS+)
                      1968 McCovey (174 OPS+), Mays (156 OPS+)
                      1970 McCovey (182 OPS+), Mays (140 OPS+)

                      From 1968-70 McCovey was a beast with 174, 209, and 182 OPS+, consecutively.

Seems like we've done this thread before. I've always been partial to Al Rosen's 1953. As the OP states:
                          Al Rosen 1953
Led league in HR, RBI, runs scored, SLG, OPS+, TB, WAR and other categories, while playing above-average defense at third base.

What it doesn't mention is he missed winning the triple crown by one hit.
They call me Mr. Baseball. Not because of my love for the game; because of all the stitches in my head.

I used to play Strat Historic Fantasy on SportingNews when they carried it. Three of my favorite players year in and year out for value were Rosen, Trotsky Jr & Pete Alexander - all who had a better chance of hitting their good numbers than now.
