  • Biggest Feuds in Baseball History

With Earl Weaver dying I remembered him and umpire Ron Luciano used to get into some heated arguments in fact it got so bad Luciano wasn't allowed to umpire Orioles game for a year. What are some of the biggest feuds in baseball history?

"(Shoeless Joe Jackson's fall from grace is one of the real tragedies of baseball. I always thought he was more sinned against than sinning." -- Connie Mack

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

In recent times, "Cowboy" Joe West and Ozzie Guillen weren't too fond of each other.
They call me Mr. Baseball. Not because of my love for the game; because of all the stitches in my head.

          Jose Mesa v. Omar Vizquel

"Even my little boy told me to get him. If I face him 10 more times, I'll hit him 10 times. I want to kill him."
Jose Mesa Jr. is in the Yankees farm system. Wonder if Vizquel has any kids trying to make the bigs?
"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

Durocher vs. the Dodgers after he went to the Giants.

Bosox vs. Rays was pretty good back roughly in the '00s.

Over on the Yankees forum interest in the Youkilis-Chamberlain feud is picking up. He-he-he. Go wife, go bear!

Tinker and Evers reportedly choreographed perfectly around the bag for years without speaking to one another, the Sam and Dave of their times.

Cobb and Crawford didn't get along, but I don't think that's a feud so much as two strong personalities going after the same fly balls.

There are lots of Durocher vs everybody, Hornsby vs everybody feuds. I can't recall too many specific pairs like Johnny Temple and Johnny Logan.

there are incidents, like Joe Adcock chasing Reuben Gomez, or Juan Marichal clubbing John Roseboro. I imagine relations weren't too cordial after those, but that seems a little different.

              Robinson-Chapman? Does that fit?

                Jeff Kent
                Ron Kittle
I'm sure theres more, these are ones I know of.

Dodgers-Giants especially in the '60s is a good one, the Marichal-Roseboro tension went way back and the clubbing wasn't the end of it. I always assumed that Roseboro was completely at fault, but he did intentionally throw the ball inches from Juan's head for no good reason and then even threatened Marichal when he said something about it...John was hardly innocent there.

Bonds also punched Phil Plantier at a batting cage one time, and I'm sure he had nasty words for almost everybody he came across. It would have been fun to see big ol Ron Kittle pound a pre-steroid freak Bonds.

I'd have to search to find the details, but John McGraw baited almost everybody and once went about trying to destroy the reputation of a former Giant player he had argued with. After yelling out "ICE WAGON!!" as that player tried hard but failed to beat the relay on a DP grounder he had hit (I assume they were exceptionally slow vehicles), McGraw got a surprise visit from the player at the team hotel and narrowly escaped a vicious beating by fleeing to his room with Mr. Wagon in hot pursuit and locking the door.

Didn't John McGraw and Wilbert Robinson have a longtime feud? I seem to recall that they were former teammates and friends, but they had a falling out, and when Robinson went to manage the Dodgers they became fierce rivals.

                        Dusty Baker and Tony LaRussa.

Lance Berkman admitted that he couldn't stand LaRussa either when he was still with the division rival Astros. However, when he came over to the Cardinals in 2011, he realized that Tony would do anything for his players and would defend them every time. Berkman became a huge LaRussa fan during that first season in St. Louis, and was the first to give Tony a giant bear hug after Allen Craig caught the final out of the 2011 World Series.

Scott Rolen and Tony LaRussa also had a sour relationship before Rolen was done in St. Louis.

In LaRussa's first season managing the Cardinals, 1996, Ozzie Smith got upset with him for playing the younger Royce Clayton a lot at SS. Tony said in his book that Ozzie went many years without speaking to him because he felt slighted in that final year.

Bob Gibson and any opposing hitter.

                        Joe Medwick and Dizzy Dean.

Yadier Molina and Brandon Phillips, the game after Phillip's ridiculous grade school comments about the Redbirds on Twitter. Their confrontation at the plate led to that brawl. That ended the career of Jason LaRue (Cardinals veteran backup C and former Reds star C), after he was viciously kicked in the head multiple times by Johnny Cueto.

That's probably overstated. No one campaigned for Crawford's HOF candidacy more than Cobb. He may have simply mellowed as he aged, too. There are a lot of photos of him at HOF induction weekends seemingly really enjoying himself. I know he showed up at Tiger Stadium a lot to check things out long after he had retired.

I remember reading a biography on Ty Cobb as a kid where he tore into the abilities of the great Honus Wagner before the Pirates v Tigers World series. I don't remember if Wagner ever responded to Cobb's comments, but he got the last laugh anyway. Someone here will know better if that was ever a real feud or not.

Gary Templeton and Whitey Herzog had a feud which got Templeton out of St Louis.
