Bulls secure 2nd... Eagles and Tigers remain at the top

Edison Volquez threw 5 dominant innings, and marked the way to a 2-0 victory over the lions. He allowed just 3 hits and gave up 2 bases, while striking out 7.

In another pitcher duel, the tigers got the best part, and took care of the giants 2-1. Felix Diaz won that game pitching 6 innings, where he allowed 7 hits and one earned run. He struck out 3 and walked one. The losing pitcher was Jose Capellan, who pitched good, but not good enough. 7 strong innings allowing 2 runs, 5 hits, struck out 4 and walked 2. Pedro Liriano, Jorge Sosa and Yhency Brazoban finished Felix Diaz's work. Brazoban got his 12th save.

In Santiago, the eagles kept pace with the tigers, pounding the stars 7-3. Arnaldo Muñoz got the win in a relief effort, while Anastacio Martinez lost his 3rd game of the season. Willie Mo Peña homered for the eagles.

He's 2nd right now (in my opinion) in the pitcher of the year race, behind fellow teammate Raul Valdez. He pitches for the Eastern Bulls, which play in the city of La Romana.

Tigers beat the Eagles when it counts, now alone in 1st!

Erick Aybar, Anderson Hernandez and Napoleon Calzado (in that order in the picture) combined for 10 of the 17 hits of the tigers, and the tigers pounded the Eagles 10-3. Aybar went 5-5, including a double and 2 scored, and got in bases in his 6 plate appereances, as he also got a base on ball. Hernandez went 3-5, Calzado 2-5, Jose Offerman 3-5 and Jose Bautista hit a 2 run shut. Jose Lima was the losing pitcher allowing 4 earned in 4 innings. The victory leaves the tigers alone in 1st place. Licey's magic number is now down to 5.

In Santo Domingo, the Lions could hold on and win an exciting pitching duel 2-1. Doug Linton (stars) and Roman Colon (lions) were both pitching a shutout until the bottom of the 6th, when Enrique Wilson hit a solo shot... The game was 1-0 until the top of the 9th, when the stars tied up the game, but then a good base running in the bottom of the 9th of Neifi Perez, that lead to a throwing error from Manny Alexander, let the winning run score. They now tie at 3rd place.

In La Romana, Raul Valdez wasn't as effective as always, allowing 4 runs, and Aquilino Lopez pitched 6.1 innings, struck out 4 and walked one, allowing no runs. The final score was 4-1. On the losing end, Esteban German keeps up with his MVP season, and went 3-5

              Today's Games
              Bulls @ Tigers
              Jose Mercedes 2-3 5.87 vs. Manny Aybar 0-0 2.02

              Giants @ Stars
              Elizardo Ramirez 0-3 5.21 vs. Tom Shearn 1-1 3.04

              Lions @ Eagles
Nerio Rodriguez 3-3 3.38 vs. TBA

              Here are the updated standings:

No. He's not playing, and I think he won't play. He's owned by the stars, and it seems they won't make the playoffs... He hasn't played since the 1999-2000 season

No problem, there's only 10 games in the regular season left, so I'll post his numbers by the end of the season, that way he has 2 more starts or so

                              Dominicans shine in Puerto Rico

In pictures, a dominican fan waves his flag in celebration. 2nd picture: Eddie Garabito (DOM) slides safely in home.

In a game delayed by rain, the Dominican Republic showed timely offense, and the bullpen hung 8 straight zeros, to beat the puertorican team 6-2.

Puerto Rico took the lead in the bottom of the first with a sac fly of José “Tony” Valentín scoring Eric Reed, who reached base on an error of firstbaseman Willis Otáñez.

Pedro Valdés drove in the 2nd run for Puerto Rico with a roller to 1st that batted in Luis “Wicho” Figueroa from third.

The dominicans responded with 3 runs in the 2nd inning.

With 2 outs in the top of the 2nd, a throwing error of SS Figueroa, allowed the first 2 dominican runs to score. Luis Polonia drove in the 3rd run with a linedrive triple by the right field line.

For Dominican Republic, Joel Peralta struck out 2 and sorted out a bases loaded mess by fouling out José Velázquez.

Reliever Juan Padilla came in the 7th with 2 outs and runners in 1st and 2nd, but couldn't stop the dominicans, that scored their fourth run with a single by centerfield of the bat of Alexis Gómez.

The official attendance was of 6.517.

The game was dedicated to legendary firstbaseman Víctor Pellot Power, who died recently at age 78.

Luis Polonia chosen MVP - Willie Mo HR Derby Champion

The dominicans swept all the all star trophies by winning both the MVP and HR derby trophies.

Luis Polonia, a 22 season veteran in the dominican winter league, was chosen as the Most Valuable Player. In the dominican campaign, Polonia has an average of .289, two homeruns, 18 driven in, six stolen bases and 20 runs scored wearing an Cibao Eagles uniform.

In the homerun derby, the dominican won the contest 5-4. Mo Peña hit 2, Otañez and Nelson Cruz hit one each.

By Puerto Rico, Tony Valentin hit 4 homeruns, but his teammates didn't add any, so Puerto Rico lost the derby.

I just wanted to say this has been a great thread Licey Fan. I have found that winter league stats, information, et cetera are very difficult to come by in the U.S. Even the teams web pages seem to have alot of misinformation. Your posts have made it easier to follow for a non-spanish speaking fan to follow the games. Muchas gracias for the updates!

I do have a few questions if you have the time to answer them. First, can you confirm that Edwin Encarnacion has been playing 2B? If so, how has he looked on defense? Is Wily Mo Peña playing 1B and how many games has he started at that position? How has he looked on defense at first base?

I believe you mentioned Jung Bong. Would that be Jung Keun Bong from the Cincinnati Reds? If so, how is he doing? And do you have any information on Joe Valentine and Elizardo Ramierez?

Thanks again for the updates. They have been great.
