República Dominicana apoyará al IBAF en el caso cubano

SANTO DOMINGO (EFE).- República Dominicana apoyará "completamente" la decisión que asuma la Federación Internacional de Béisbol (IBAF, siglas en inglés), en torno a la negativa de Estados Unidos de conceder el permiso a la selección de Cuba que participará del Clásico Mundial de béisbol.

"Está claro de que respaldaremos completamente la postura de la IBAF", reveló hoy a EFE el presidente de la Federación Dominicana de Béisbol (FEDOBE), Héctor Pereyra.


El presidente de la IBAF, el italiano Aldo Notari aseguró que ese organismo retirará el aval al Clásico si finalmente Cuba no participa del evento, según una información aparecida el sábado en la página electrónica ESPN.

La posición de Notari responde a la decisión del Departamento del Tesoro estadounidense que rechazó la participación de Cuba en el Clásico, al señalar que la misma violaría la ley que rige el embargo que desde hace más de 40 años aplica a la Isla el gobierno de Estados Unidos.

"Nos reuniremos para analizar este aspecto del Clásico, pero de antemano podemos adelantar que la FEDOBE se ciñe estrictamente a los reglamentos y directrices de la IBAF", reiteró Pereyra.

Sin embargo, Pereyra explicó de que aún "hay mucho tiempo" antes del inicio del Clásico, "y muchas cosas pueden pasar".

Cuba, como parte del Grupo "C" que incluye a Holanda, Panamá y Puerto Rico, está supuesta a jugar en esta última isla la primera parte del Clásico.

Puerto Rico es un Estado Libre Asociado a Estados Unidos, que controla su política migratoria.

Los cubanos, tres veces campeones olímpicos y amos absolutos de los campeonatos mundiales de béisbol, dieron a conocer su intención de donar los ingresos que obtengan en el Clásico, a las víctimas del huracán "Katrina" que azotó Nueva Orléans (EEUU), el año pasado.

La posición de la FEDOBE se une a la tomada por las federaciones de béisbol de Puerto Rico y Venezuela, que han anunciado su intención de retirarse del Clásico si los cubanos no pueden participar.

El Clásico de Béisbol, que reunirá a selectivos de 16 países, es organizado por la Oficina del Comisionado del Béisbol de las Grandes Ligas en coordinación con la IBAF.

Las Ligas Mayores están a la espera de que el Departamento del Tesoro estadounidense revise la decisión en torno a la inclusión cubana en el evento, antes de tomar una postura definitiva.

Desde el anuncio de su celebración, el Clásico Mundial de béisbol ha estado lleno de controversias no sólo por el tema cubano, sino por las posiciones de algunas "estrellas" de las Grandes Ligas que han decidido no jugar, u otros a quienes sus respectivos equipos han negado su actuación.

También se cuenta la decisión del tercera base de los Yanquis de Nueva York, Alex Rodríguez, quien decidió no ver acción en el Clásico para no "herir", al país donde nació, Estados Unidos, ni al de sus padres, República Dominicana.

También se destaca la negativa del jardinero japonés de los Yanquis, Hideki Matsui, a participar con el equipo de su país, mientras que los propios "Mulos del Bronx" negaron el permiso al receptor puertorriqueño Jorge Posada.EFE
