  • Why Domincan players are so arrogant?

I do not know if anyone have had the opportunity to read the statements from some of the Dominican players in the Spanish media.

David Ortiz, Moises Alou, Odalis Perez and even the Dominican president have made statements that their are the best in the world and that they are going to win the Classic easily.

Although they have a strong team it will not be an easy task for them. I hate when people start speculating that they are the best in the world.
    Such a pity!

You forgot Arimas and Manny Ramirez.

The DR players started talking because Zambrano from venenzuela started talking crap....and with a lineup like this we get bragging rights.

          1 A. Soriano (2B)
          2 M. Tejada (SS)
          3 A. Pujols (1B)
          4 D. Ortiz (DH)
          5 M. Ramirez (OF)
          6 V. Gerrero (OF)
          7 A. Ramirez (3B)
          8 W. Tavarez (OF)
          9 S. Martinez (C)

          P. Martinez (SP)

It's just spicing things up... I don't see what's wrong about that... That's just building confidence...

About Ortiz' and President Fernandez' comments, that's just replying to a statement made by Zambrano after Venezuela's win in the CS

This reminds me of boxers who spout off before the big match only to have crow shoved down their throats in the ring.

Venezuela vs Dominican Republic is a must see game. Actually, both teams are going to face each other more than once.

Certainly, Italy, Australia and the two teams from the Puerto Rican bracket that advances should be happy to see this two teams beating each other.

Wait so Alou, Ortiz, and Perez make comments about winning this thing and that makes them arrogant?

I don't see the post where Texiera and Damon said they were gonna win on here? Why aren't the Americans claimed as 'Arrogant' also?

I don't believe the Dominicans to be arrogant but confident.
What pitcher would want to see Soriano, Tejada, Pujols, Ramirez, Ortiz, Vladimir, Aramis all in a row?

But lets be honest here...on paper....the Dominican team is matched by no one else. But 'On Paper' doesn't win games as the Yanks have repeatedly proved.

I said, Mr. Barrow, there is only one answer to that - Mr. Gehrig is terribly underpaid."- Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio

I once read a comment from Clemente about calling himself the best ML baseball player.
He explained that he meant he was the best player for himself...that he was showing self-confidence, that any Latino man would say he was the best at what he did to show that he was proud of himself, and that another Latino man would understand that. But, the American writers would take this as a sign that he was arrogant (and, maybe, unrealistic).
Maybe I didn't understand his comments completely, but I think that I got the gist of them. And, I am very curious as to what other Latin people would have to say about this. I'm not trying to stir a pot or anything, just curious to understand the culture better.

                            HB,
                            I can totally understand Clemente.

I think there is a bit of a culture clash. The media here is very sensitive and is ready to stir the pot no matter what it's cooking with. Things like this aren't even news worthy and you would have a hard time finding it in the papers.

Hispanic players who state they are the best at this or that it's just a sense of them being that confident in their abilities. They are not trying to show anyone up and let the player next to him think that he's above him.
That player is very confident in his abilities and is letting you know that he feels good about the outcome, whatever it maybe.

Thanks for the comments, TS. You make me think that I might have understood Clemente's point reasonably well. You'd think that writers who cover MLB and Latin players regularly would get this!
