  • BASEBALL & SOFTBALL RETURN AS OLYMPIC SPORTS IN 2020

Some recent television ads and talk show programs have alerted me to he fact that the 2020 Olympic, tto be held in Tokyo, Japan are now less than one year away.
BASEBALL returns to the Olympics after a 12 year absence. I remember the 2008 American team featured budding superstar Stephen Strasburg and a Phillies minor league second baseman, Jason Donald, who later got to the majors with Cleveland for a few years. That team managed only to score a Bronze Medal (Third Place) despite the fact that Baseball was
"America's Game". Softball will be back as an Olympic sport too.
How will the American Baseball and Softball Teams be selected? Will the Olympic Baseball team contain no major leaguers as they have in the past? What will be the criteria for selecting these baseball and softball teams, some sort of tryout process? When do these tryouts begin? Or for baseball are they strictly going to be on an invitation only basis from a committee choosing between the best American Collegiate players and/or minor leaguers?

After years of difficult efforts by the WBSC to return Baseball to the Olympics, they were successful in adding Baseball to the Games.

However, this success was gutted by the Olympic Committee's decision to have only six teams in the competition. That is a ridiculous decision.
