  • Battle Lines being drawn to sign Jorge Soler

Now that Yoenis Cespedes has signed with Oakland and the Chicago Cubs have snagged a young Cuban pitching star, the next noteworthy signing of a young former Cuban National team star will be that of outfielder Jorge Soler. Soler is projected as a power hitting corner outfielder or perhaps as a first baseman. He doesn't turn 20 until November 2012, so he'll need two or three years in the minors, but is rated as having a great upside. The Cubs again have scouted the Caribbean market and are interested in him as are the Toronto Blue Jays, who worked him out in the Dominican republic this week. The prospect of having a young Cuban star as a gate attraction in heavily Cuban populated Miami means that the Marlins certainly will be in the hunt once Commisioner Bud Selig declares Soler eligible to sign with a major league team. The most recent stories have indicated that the Phillies and Yankees may have rated Soler the highest and want him the most. It could come down to a bidding war between these two teams according to one source.
