  • 2021 World Baseball Classic

I know the 2017 edition just started, but there are some of us that cannot wait to start discussing the 2021 WBC and its Qualifiers. Let's try keeping the 2017 WBC thread clear of any 2021 Classic talk and discuss them on this thread instead. Let's hope this evolves over the next four years much like the 2013 AND 2017 threads did!

Sorry Amazins, beat ya to it

I clicked on this thread thinking it was the 2017 WBC thread, but to my surprise it was the 2021 WBC! It is ok if you beat me to it; all that matters is that someone started this one. Ok, let's get down to business. Based on Manfred's comments on the potential for an expanded WBC Qualifier round. Which teams would any of you invite (maximum of 12)? So far we have the following results:

If I was running the WBC, my system would be very straight forward, I would just go down the WBSC rankings and invite the top 12 ranked teams who were not qualified for the WBC.

I'm not sure if you are fully aware of how the WBSC generates its ranking; many folks here, including myself, don't agree with it.

Well safe to say Israel is in this tourney if the quali rules stay the same. it actually now comes down to either Korea or Taiwan dropping down to qualis. I guess if either dropped, they would be a shoo-in for hosting the qualifier.

Amazins, you and I have gone back-and-forth on this, but I'd like to see some sort of sub-quali to go along with not giving 12 countries an automatic bid. I am all for seeing the eight teams that advance make it. That third place team in each pool though: not so much.

I'm all for any of these modifications to take place:
              • the eight teams that advance automatically qualify in any scenario
              • A sub-qualifer to make the final qualifying stage (or an only quali stage) in 2018-19
              • A round-robin eight-team, two pool format with the top two advancing in 2021. Those teams would be: 2017 3rd place, 2017 4th place. Top two in each pool qualify.
              • the four teams that fail to qualify, the eight teams who finished second and third in the qualis, and the four sub-qualifier winners in 2020.

              Or.....
              • The last place finishers are relegated to qualifying, but the main field expands to 20 in some format.

I don't believe that this tournament is ready to cut loose four more developed baseball nations into the pool of minnows. I don't believe lopsided results benefit anyone and that would occur with more frequency if it is done at this time. I am ok with expanding the main event, but also allowing more nations to participate in the qualifiers. In a perfect future world all teams would need to qualify, but in the flawed present world; twelve automatic bids are fine.

I hope there is a move to put some games on ESPN or NBCSN or FS1 (or maybe have FOX pick up a few games!). MLB network does a great job covering the tournament not everyone cable network provides MLB network and a casual fan is more likely to turn espn on and see whats on than to go to MLB network.

The rights for the WBC's 2013 & 2017 English broadcasts have belonged exclusively to MLB Network. There is a chance that the future rights could be sold to ESPN, NBCSN or FS1. I just hope ESPN doesn't get it, their coverage of the 2006 WBC Championship Game is an example of why they don't treat the tournament with any respect. I would like for NBCSN and/or FS1 to take over with MLB Network; tape delayed games are not fun to watch.

So much this. Not to mention they also have cross-promotional talent that works with NBC (Brian Kenny, Bob Costas, Joe Magrane) and FOX Sports (Matty V, Harold Reynolds, John Smoltz).

If games overlap, then MLBN can show the overlapping games.

Any early BOLD predictions on First Round pool hosts in 2021?

I'm going to go with Korea, somewhere in Europe, Puerto Rico, and either Arizona or Mexico.

                        Second Round: Japan and Houston

Finals: Anaheim or Seattle (or new A's ballpark if built by then)

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in West Asia Cup; don't know how much that is going to help in their rankings. Remember that the WBSC President is on the WBC Steering Committee.

If the bottom 4 teams end up being Taiwan, China, Canada, and Mexico, the only qualifier where the other teams will have much if any chance will be vs. China, so will be interesting to see how MLB setup the qualifier draw (I know, long time away).
