I was just wondering how many of you have the Sabermetric Baseball Encyclopedia software published by Lee Sinins?? I find this product, which has been been acclaimed by such people as Peter Gammons and Jayson Stark, to be an indispensible tool for the serious baseball fan.

Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

You can break down stats by position, who hit the most home runs or other hitting stats for first baseman only, or third baseman or any position. Who hit the most home runs or any other hitting stat by right handed hitters, left handed hitters and even switch hitters. Who did the most in certain age groups and can even be broken down by body weight and even by height. Anyone interested, even by birth place, by state.
Fielding, what outfielder, first baseman or any position had the highest fielding percentage, most assists and then you can break that down by those who were lefthanded throwers or right handed.
No way to list all that this CD can do, I would be lost with out it.Last edited by SHOELESSJOE3; 01-29-2006, 05:41 AM.

I too can do everything that the Encyclopedia can do with access but it so much easier to do with the encyclopedia. I've bought it twice now will probably by it again in a few years. The one thing I wish it could do (because its the one thing I can't figure out how to do in Access)is do search's from beginning of career to x years. Or compile stats based on a set amount of years. For instance most home runs in a 10 year span, most home runs in first 10 years. Best compiled batting average for a 5 year stretch between 1960-1979 and so forth. Right now it can be done but it is tedious to do.

The thing I wish this could do that I struggle to do correctly in access is sort a player's performance in descending order and then give me the sum of the X number of best single seasons. Try doing that in Access...it's a nine step process...LOL
When I was trying to evaluate career greatness the old fashioned way using PCA wins created figures and doing the Jamesian Top three seasons thing...I had to find the top season...end it for each player...then find the top season that was not the first top....enter that...then find the top season that was not either of the first two...what a pain.

Yeah access is a pain involving 9 million queries which is why the encyclopedia can be real handy most of the time. I think it took me 6 queries just to get a list of career home run totals for every single player who played and did not hit 10 or more homers in a season. On top of that if you want to sort or filter based fielding positions woohee man is that a pain in the butt.
