  • What is OWP?

OK, I'm simultaneously confused enough, and humble enough, to ask about what seems to be the latest geekfad sabernumber, since it's festooing the Hall of Fame board like monkey droppings after a banana harvest.

What exactly is Offensive Winning Percentage and why should I care about which hall of fame hitters have it?

I don't know, but it sounds very important.

      Google is your friend...

OWP is a measure of what percentage of a team's game that team would win if it the line-up was nine Player Xes, facing average pitching and playing average defense.

The formula to figure it is (Runs Created per 27 outs) divided by the League average of runs scored per game. Square the result and divide it by (1+itself).

HMM... involuted, but compared to a lot of sabermetric handwavium, relatively straightforward. I guess I can see how it'd be useful in the abstract but wouldn't you think there'd be simpler ways to ask the same kinda questions?

But it's fun to create more cockamamie stats.

Just for reference, the 2007 league's leaders:

          David Ortiz, BOS - .800
          Chipper Jones, ATL - .759

46 wins to match last year's total

I wonder who changed the name of this thread, good thing too.

Not a great stat. A player does not create (many) extra plate appearances for himself, he creates them for "average" hitters.
