  • ? about retrosheet

like many on here,i love retrosheet and think it is a terrific site. my question concerns the game log part where you can get the boxscores. is there a particular reason why boxscores are not avalible for many seasons? are those stats lost forever or is there just difficulty in putting them up?

I believe that the boxscores are generated from the play-by-play logs, so that you will typically see boxscores only for the seasons where PBP data is available (1954-forward). The gamelog data for non-PBP years is basically a shell which contains the data that is available for the time. In the later non-PBP years you can see lineups, umps, linescores, etc. However, earlier time periods may have nothing more than a final score.
