  • Alex Rodriguez - Chasing 74, 763, or 800?

Now, this exact topic has been a very popular discussion in several other message boards and forums. 8) As a result, it is only right that we ask the same question here on Baseball Fever!

    CHASING RECORDS

Which record do you think Alex Rodriguez will have a better chance of surpassing.... the single season record of 73 home-runs, the all-time record of 762 home-runs, or being the 1st player in the history of baseball to ever hit 800 home-runs?

I cant see him hitting 74 in a season. In fact i cant see anyone doing it in the near future.
763 certainly looks possible though. He needs another 241 to top bonds and If he remains healthy until he's 40 (8 seasons including this one) he needs just an average of 30HR per season. Even with a natural age decline i can see him being able to do that. And if he's not far off when he's 40 he's still got another 2 years on his contract to chase the total. Play out his contract and he needs less than 25 a season.

800 is unlikely unless he can continue hitting 50+ for another 3 or 4 years and not have any major slumps or injuries. Of course, every season he can continue hitting his career average (44) will make it more likely.

No way he sees 74. That record will stand for a LONG TIME. He probably wont last long enough to make it to 800. So I agree with the poster above, 763 is the most probable.

Through age 32 A-Rod is ahead of Sadaharu Oh's career HR (about 35 HRs I believe) pace and cleared 800 HR by a rather large margin (868). And Oh only played until age 40. A-Rod surely has a solid shot at 800 HRs.

            Sodaharu Oh anyone? 868 HR's.

And yes, A-Rod is ahead of O's pace, so seeing as how he is on pace to hit 100 more than Bonds*, he should EASILY be able to pass him, and has an even shot at 800.

Oh come on, Randy. Is it necessary to be so negative? I think someone's a little worried that A-Rod will finish with more runs, hits, home runs, RBI, total bases, and maybe a few other stats that a certain Yankee slugger excelled in. People will say, "Hey, he played shortstop and third base. Ruth was a corner outfielder. A-Rod also was a better base-stealer. He must be better than Babe Ruth!" You and I know the argument is flawed, but I get the feeling it troubles you that A-Rod is on pace to break a lot of Ruth's counting numbers, and people might erroneously regard him as the superior player.

By the way, how is it possible for A-Rod to have a better chance of passing 800 than of reaching 763?

Did A-Rod take over Willie Mays's spot as arguably the greatest all-around player ever?

                          Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I personally think he will reach the historic number of 800 HR's. The single season record however would be extremely difficult as you need to stay healthy, be consistantly hot all year, and hope that people pitch to you.... so there are way too many factors involved.

Either way, it will be a great opportunity to continue to witness history as A-Rod keeps on 'Chasing Records' here in the Bronx.

I said that he'll reach 763 home runs. According to Bill James' favorite toy, he is on pace for about 774 career home runs, and he therefore has a 54.8% chance of reaching 763. He also has a 41% chance at reaching 800.

And when you think about it, if he reaches 763 then 800 is just one more solid season away. He may very well reach that as well.

Right now A-Rod has the potential to break the all-time records in HRs, RBI's, runs, total bases, and strikeouts, and perhaps have 3,600-3,700 hits.
