Ruth's #10 output is higher than almost everyone's career high.

eh i think OPS+ now is fine.

look at what Bonds/Mcgwire/Sosa all do in their best seasons, all made 200 and more. Giambi got to 198.

the bottom talent in the league is probably just as bad, look at all the strikeouts these days.

oh, and look at the year 1994

frank thomas, ken griffey jr, paul o'neal jeff bagwell, albert belle, kevin mitchell, barroid

ALL these guys had dominating years in terms of OPS+ in the same season.

griffey's 170 OPS+ (4th place that year in the AL, 7th overall) is good for #2 in baseblal behind A-rod last year i believe.

utley won't be averaging a home run every 10 atbats by september

he's just having a hot month

and yes i do think every stadium should have a set rule for fence distance

Well, HR numbers are indeed inflated.

Perhaps, my choice of "beast" wasn't the most prudent wording.

The guy is a very talented hitter, and does seem to generate surprising power for a guy his size with his swing. He seems to have no trouble popping 'em out of the more spacious alleys at Shea, unfortunately...

In eras of yore, he may have been more of a doubles hitter - I certainly buy that. I simply meant that that there are players propped up way more by this era than Utley. Utley would have been a star in the 70's, just a different kind of player. The .265 25-30 HR hitter who Ks 120 times and walks 40, and plays poor defense to boot (I dunno, Dan Uggla or something) that's a different story...

I was just looking at Utley's HR table at www.hittrackeronline.com

So far, 9 HR at Citizens, 2 at GAB in Cin, and one each in Coors and Millers, all very HR friendly parks.

He has a pronounced cluster of balls pulled to RF, which remind me a lot of Nate McLouth.

From regularly watching McLouth, he will often take a high fastball and line it about 380 ft to RF.

I believe the clue to their success is that when they get "their" pitch, they do not let it pass - they recognize the pitch, swing, and put it in play.
