  • MLB Batter Efficiency Ratings

I've come up with a rating system for batters that I like more than the popular OPS (on base pct plus slugging pct). In my opinion, OPS double dips batting average in both on base pct and slugging pct skewing the players true batting efficiency. What I've done is taken each team and players total plat appearances (PA) and multiplied that by the maximum result...4 for a Home Run. I've then tallied up the players Total Bases (1B,2B,3B,HR), Walks, and Hit by Pitch. After I get those two totals (TB, BB, & HPB) and (PA X 4), I divide the amount the player has accumulated (TB, BB, & HPB) by their total plate appearances times 4 (PA X 4).

This efficiency rating doesn't account for any stolen base stats. It's also not weighted for each park factor as going through each player's log is alot tougher than getting all the players totals from 1 page. It may tweak some of the teams and player rankings slightly but not enough, in my opinion, where the numbers aren't an accurate reading of what's happening on the field.

My idea of the rating is to show which players you'd want up at the plate giving a team the greatest potential to score a run. You can't steal first base, so it didn't make sense to me to have it part of pure batter rating.

Here are 2012 MLB teams and players, with 250 PA or more, through 7/19 games. Here's the link it the format isn't readable.

    that's a great effort.

But do you know wOBA? It does basically the same and too avoids the mathematical shortcomings of OPS (adding different denominators, over valuing slugging, not weighing the bases correctly...).

but I like your system. any system that counts total bases and uses PAs as a denominator can't do really wrong.

however I would suggest you to use the realistic linear weights for run correlation (just google wOBA and linear weights). using 1 (single, walk and HP),2 (2B), 3 (3B) 4 (HR) is not really (OPS as crude and primitive as it is mathematically does give you decent correlations with runs ) bad but you might get a more accurate results with actual linear weights.
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

I admire your tenacity, but using the 1-2-3-4 weighting system for Total Bases is sorta obsolete in the era of Linear Weights.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I understand what you are talking about and found an example of the weights.

        R/G = (.49S + .61D + 1.14T + 1.50HR + .33W + .14SB + .73SF)/G

I'll add those factors in and have two sets of numbers.

        1. My pct of total base "potential", meaning the pct out of the max of 4 for each plate appearance (the numbers I've posted above)
        2. The suggestion of the linear weights.

Next time I update the numbers I'll list the weighted numbers next to my set.
