  • Minor League teams named for sports stuff that isn't Baseball

What Minor League teams are named after sports-stuff that isn't Baseball related?

    I can think of...
Augusta Greenjackets (After the Masters green jacket)
Kannapolis Intimidators (the team is owned by the Earnhardt family)
Brockton Rox (named after Rocky Marciano)

Any others people can think of?

IMO most of their names are not baseball related. What do Biscuits, Timber Ratlers, Oaks etc. have to do with baseball?

...but they aren't named after items from other sports.

Most of the names have to do with something from the area surrounding the field.

        Just like the Biscuits! Mmmmhmmm...

How about minor and major league stadiums named after banks? It's the same thing. The almighty dollar speaks.

Is politics a sport? If so, count the Harrisburg Senators.

Our team here in Northern Virginia was, from 1989-2004, called the Cannons because of the Civil War history of the community they are located, Prince William County, VA. In 2005, with the return of MLB to Washington, they lined up as an affiliate of the Nationals, and changed their name to Potomac Nationals.

I also know of the Norfolk Tides (located in a beach community), Salem Avalanche (located in a mountainous community), Lynchburg Hillcats (Lynchburg is filled with hills and is near mountains), Myrtle Beach Pelicans (self explanatory), and Frederick Keys (Francis Scott Key wrote Star Spangled Banner and was a Frederick native.)

Still none of these names are based on things from other sports, see first post.

Richmond was going to call itself the Confederates when the Orioles moved there in 1954. Due to pressure from the Black community they changed their name to the the Virginians.

I believe the Lake County Captains had a problem with their original name. They were also going to have a mascot named Ka-Boom. I think an astronaut form the area was killed in the Challanger explosion and the whole explosion premise was scrapped.

I don't remember the deatils, though. RuthMayBonds probably does, because that's in his part of Ohio.

                          Team Names

The Vermont Lake Monsters! Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Formerly the Vermont Expos. Named after a legendary serpent(like Nessie) in Lake Memphremagog which is on the Vermont/Canada border.

I think Ka-Boom was gonna be the mascot for the Akron Aeros. The schoolteacher astronaut was from there.
Lets Go Yankees, Valley Cats, Dutchmen, UT Spartans and ECU Pirates.

The schoolteacher astronaut, Christa MacAuliffe, was from New Hampshire. It was actually the other woman on the mission, Judith Resnik, who was from Akron.
