  • 99-year-old former minor leaguer Joe Gulledge passes away

    Joe Glenn Gulledge Sr., 99, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Mr. Gulledge will lie in state beginning Tuesday, Jan. 1. Joe was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Edom.

    He attended the three-room school at Edom. He joined the Navy in 1931, was discharged in 1934 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Joe enrolled in the University of Oklahoma in 1936. He played baseball at the university for two years and signed to play baseball for the Boston Braves (now Atlanta Braves) farm team in Hartford, Conn. He injured his right shoulder in spring training and could only play two years.

    Red Benton, who was 113-57 with a 3.60 ERA in seven minor league seasons in the 1940s and 1950s died recently, too.
