Does anyone know the date of Bill Gatewood's death?

Also, can any speak to whether or not Gatewood was really the one who taught Satchel Paige his hesitation pitch?

I have William Gatewood, born 22 August 1881, died December 1962. I don't have a specific day or place (the death date is from the Social Security Death Index), though his social security number was issued in Missouri and he seems to have maintained his residence in Missouri through much of his baseball career, regardless of where he was playing. Somebody else might know more.

Don't know for sure about the hesitation pitch, but Gatewood is also said to have given Cool Papa Bell his nickname.

      Thanks Agate Type.

I was able to find the info elsewhere. Gatewood passed away in Dec. 1962.

Yes, Gatewood was also credited with coining the nickname "Cool Papa."

In Moberly, MO, Gatewood coached baseball and Jimmie Crutchfield and Leroy Matlock were pupils who graduated to the Negro Leagues.
